Antwerp
Base · 2–3 nights
Flanders’ strongest stop for Rubens, the Plantin-Moretus Museum, fashion, contemporary art and restaurants that feel properly metropolitan. Come for a dense museum-and-food city break, not for a Bruges-style medieval fantasy.
Ghent
Base · 3 nights
The best all-round first base: medieval quays and the Ghent Altarpiece, but with a working university city’s bars, vegetarian food and evening life. Give it at least two nights; it is more rewarding than a quick station-to-center dash suggests.
Bruges
Base · 2 nights
Canals, brick lanes, the Belfry, the Beguinage and Flemish Primitive painting make this the essential short stay. It is at its best before day-trippers arrive and after they leave, so sleep rather than merely passing through.
Mechelen
A compact former Burgundian court city with St Rumbold’s Tower, canals and a genuinely calm center between Antwerp and Brussels. It works well for one unhurried night or a family-focused stop, rather than as a substitute for Ghent or Antwerp.
Leuven and the Hageland
Short stop · 1 night
Leuven delivers Gothic university architecture, beer culture, Park Abbey and a lively Oude Markt in a compact package. Use it for a one- or two-night rail stop, especially if beer and student-city energy matter more than canals.
Flemish Coast
Base · 2 nights
A developed 67-kilometre shoreline best approached as distinct stops: Ostend for seafood and urban culture, De Haan for quiet Belle Époque streets, Knokke-Heist for polished beach life, and De Panne for dunes. Base in Ostend for the easiest rail access and Coastal Tram connections.
Ypres and the Westhoek
Base · 2 nights
Ypres’s In Flanders Fields Museum and nightly Last Post provide the emotional core; Poperinge adds hop country and beer culture. Stay overnight if the Last Post matters, and use a car, bike or organized tour for the scattered battlefield sites.
Flemish Ardennes
Base · 2 nights
The rolling country around Oudenaarde and Ronse is where Flanders’ cobbled cycling mythology becomes real: short brutal climbs, farm lanes and village breweries. It is a cycling or e-bike destination, not a scenic detour to tackle by occasional bus.
Limburg
Base · 2 nights
Flanders’ green escape combines Hasselt as an urban base with Bokrijk, Haspengouw orchards and the heath-and-forest country of Hoge Kempen. Commit two or three nights and a bike or car; a quick train visit to Hasselt misses the point.
Kempen
The sandy northeast around Turnhout, Kalmthout, Mol and Lommel is for pine woods, heathland, canals and quietly excellent flat cycling. Choose it only if slow outdoor days are the aim; it is subtle rather than instantly spectacular.
Classic first Flanders by rail
7 nightsGhent (3 nights) → Antwerp (3 nights) → Leuven and the Hageland (1 night)
The sensible first trip: base in Ghent for its own sights plus a Bruges day trip, then move to Antwerp for museums, food and nightlife. Finish in Leuven for beer and an easy Brussels-area departure. Do not dilute this with the coast or Ypres.

9 nightsAntwerp (2 nights) → Ghent (3 nights) → Bruges (2 nights) → Flemish Coast (2 nights)
For travelers who want the full art-city run but also need two slower sea days. Use Ostend as the coast base: it is practical by train and gives easy Coastal Tram access to De Haan, Knokke-Heist or De Panne.

11 nightsAntwerp (2 nights) → Ghent (3 nights) → Bruges (2 nights) → Ypres and the Westhoek (2 nights) → Limburg (2 nights)
Start car-free in the cities, then collect a rental car after Bruges for the dispersed WWI sites, Poperinge hop country and Limburg’s orchards, heath and cycling lanes. This is the right version of a broader Flanders trip; driving between the major cities is not.
Plan this routeCycling Flanders, without pretending it is flat
14 nightsAntwerp (3 nights) → Ghent (3 nights) → Flemish Ardennes (2 nights) → Ypres and the Westhoek (2 nights) → Flemish Coast (2 nights) → Limburg (2 nights)
A repeat-visitor route built around riding rather than ticking off churches. Use Ghent and Antwerp for urban culture, Oudenaarde country for cobbles and bergs, Westhoek for battlefield lanes, the coast for flat recovery rides, and Limburg for the best forest-and-orchard finish.
