Sydney
Base · 3–4 days
The essential first stop for the harbour, ferries, Opera House, Bondi-to-Coogee walk and the state’s deepest food and nightlife scene. Give it at least three full days; it is too large and expensive to treat as a quick tick-off.
Blue Mountains
Base · 2 days
Base in Katoomba or Leura for the Three Sisters, Wentworth Falls and cliff walks; use a car if you want Blackheath, Megalong Valley and less obvious trailheads. It is NSW’s most convincing short nature break from Sydney, though fog and tour-bus crowds are real.
Hunter Valley, Newcastle and Port Stephens
Base · 2 days
This is the practical north-of-Sydney trio: Pokolbin for Semillon, Shiraz and long lunches; Newcastle for a genuinely good beach-city stay; Port Stephens for dunes and family beach time. Choose a base to match the trip rather than trying to commute among all three.
Illawarra and Shoalhaven
Base · 2–3 days
The strongest easy south-coast add-on from Sydney, running from Wollongong and Kiama to Huskisson and Jervis Bay. Use Huskisson for Jervis Bay, and make time for the Grand Pacific Drive and coastal walks rather than just photographing one beach.
Northern Rivers
Base · 3 days
Byron Bay delivers the headland, surf and nightlife, but Brunswick Heads, Bangalow, Suffolk Park and the Tweed are often saner bases. Fly to Ballina rather than wasting a holiday trying to reach this subtropical corner from Sydney overland.
Mid North Coast
Base · 4 days
Use Port Macquarie for coastal walks, Bellingen for rainforest access and Coffs Harbour for a practical airport-and-beach stop. It works as a slow northbound road trip, not as one destination to cover in a single overnight.
Snowy Mountains
Base · 2 days
Jindabyne is the useful base for Thredbo, Perisher and Kosciuszko National Park: skiing in winter, alpine walking and biking in warmer months. Go with a car and realistic winter-road plans; the resorts are costly and not casually navigated.
Central West Wine Country
Base · 4 days
Orange is the sharper cool-climate wine and restaurant weekend; Mudgee is warmer, more rural and slower-paced. Treat them as separate bases, with Bathurst and Dubbo added only if their racing history or zoo specifically matter to you.
Southern Highlands
Base · 2 days
Bowral, Berrima, Mittagong and Bundanoon are for country hotels, gardens, produce and low-effort village wandering rather than blockbuster sights. It earns one or two nights between Sydney and the south coast, especially in cooler weather.
Sapphire Coast
Base · 4 days
For a quieter, wilder south coast, choose either the Narooma–Bermagui cluster or the Merimbula–Eden cluster and stay put. The reward is oysters, forest-backed beaches, coastal walks and whale watching; the mistake is trying to cover the whole coast too quickly from Sydney.
Lord Howe Island
A standalone fly-in nature holiday rather than a Sydney add-on: reef lagoon snorkelling, Mount Gower, birdlife and bike-paced days. Its small visitor cap makes it special, but also expensive and something to book far ahead.
Broken Hill and the Far West
Base · 3 days
Broken Hill, Silverton and the desert around them offer mining history, galleries, film-set landscapes and proper outback scale. It is a committed second or third NSW trip, best shaped around a flight or long rail journey rather than squeezed into a driving loop.
First NSW visit: Sydney, Blue Mountains and Jervis Bay
8 daysSydney (4 days) → Blue Mountains (2 days) → Illawarra and Shoalhaven (2 days)
The right first NSW trip: four proper days in Sydney, then the state’s easiest mountain escape and two nights around Huskisson/Jervis Bay. Use trains through the Blue Mountains; hire a car for the south coast rather than pretending local buses will solve the beach logistics.
Plan this routeSydney to Byron: north coast road trip
12 daysSydney (3 days) → Hunter Valley, Newcastle and Port Stephens (2 days) → Mid North Coast (4 days) → Northern Rivers (3 days)
For travelers who want surf, food and a one-way coastal drive rather than a rushed statewide lap. Base the Hunter portion in Newcastle for beaches and bars or Pokolbin for wine; split the Mid North Coast between Port Macquarie and Bellingen/Coffs if you want rainforest as well as beaches. Finish in Byron, Brunswick Heads or the Tweed and fly out of Ballina or the Gold Coast.
Plan this routeSouthern coast to the Snowies
14 daysSydney (3 days) → Southern Highlands (2 days) → Illawarra and Shoalhaven (3 days) → Sapphire Coast (4 days) → Snowy Mountains (2 days)
A strong second NSW trip for drivers: country inns and produce in the Highlands, enough time for Jervis Bay rather than a photo stop, then the quieter Sapphire Coast before finishing around Jindabyne and Kosciuszko. Keep the Sapphire Coast focused on one cluster—Narooma/Bermagui or Merimbula/Eden—rather than packing every town into transit days.
Plan this routeInland wine, mountains and outback
12 daysSydney (3 days) → Blue Mountains (2 days) → Central West Wine Country (4 days) → Broken Hill and the Far West (3 days)
For travelers who would rather eat, drink and drive through regional Australia than chase beaches. Give the Central West enough time to choose either Orange or Mudgee as the main base, with the other as a separate stop only if you accept the drive. Treat Broken Hill as a deliberate flight or long-rail finish—not something conveniently en route from Mudgee.
