Perth and Fremantle
Base · 2–3 days
Use Perth for Kings Park, river walks, beaches and the state’s best transport connections; stay or linger in Fremantle for the more characterful port, food and beer scene. This is the sensible base for a car-free first few days, not a substitute for regional WA.
Rottnest Island / Wadjemup
Short stop · 1 day
A car-free island of clear swimming coves, quokkas and easy beach hopping, reached by ferry from Perth or Fremantle. Take the bus unless you genuinely want a hilly, wind-exposed cycling day.
Margaret River, Yallingup, Dunsborough and Augusta
Base · 3 days
WA’s strongest all-round short-break region combines serious wine and food with surf beaches, limestone caves and Cape to Cape walking. Base near Margaret River for restaurants and cellar doors, or Yallingup/Dunsborough for a beach-led stay; a car is essential.
Exmouth, Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef / Nyinggulu
Base · 7 days
This is the state’s headline marine trip: shore snorkelling, whale-shark and manta-ray trips, turquoise bays and Cape Range’s red-rock gorges. Coral Bay is for immediate reef access; Exmouth is the practical base for Cape Range and operators.
Denmark and Albany / Kinjarling
Base · 2–3 days
Pair Denmark’s swimming coves and cool-climate wineries with Albany’s granite headlands, Southern Ocean drama and Anzac history. It is a better fit for travelers who want walks and substance alongside beaches, rather than resort weather.
Esperance and Cape Le Grand National Park
Base · 4 days
Base in Esperance for Great Ocean Drive, then give Cape Le Grand proper time for Lucky Bay, granite hikes and the state’s most surreal white-sand beaches. It is remote enough to deserve three nights, not a token stop on a rushed southwest loop.
Kalbarri and Shark Bay / Monkey Mia
Base · 4 days
These are the worthwhile middle stops on a Coral Coast drive north: Kalbarri for river gorges and cliffs, Shark Bay for Shell Beach, Francois Peron country and marine scenery. Give each time as a staged road-trip stop rather than treating either as a replacement for Ningaloo.
Pemberton, Manjimup and the Southern Forests
Short stop · 1 day
Detour inland for giant karri forest, orchard country, farm-gate produce and winter truffles. It is a deliberately slow contrast to the coast, best added only when the South West trip has enough days to breathe.
Broome and the Dampier Peninsula
Broome delivers Cable Beach sunsets, pearling history and a relaxed tropical base without requiring a full Kimberley expedition. Treat it as a fly-in dry-season stay; the Dampier Peninsula needs deliberate road and vehicle planning.
Karijini National Park
The Pilbara’s deep red gorges and cold pools make for WA’s most dramatic hiking-and-swimming landscape. Go prepared for heat, long internal drives and rougher infrastructure; this is an active trip, not a scenic roadside stop.
Kununurra, Purnululu and the East Kimberley
Kununurra is the practical base for Lake Argyle, scenic flights and access toward Purnululu’s Bungle Bungle Range. This is the focused Kimberley extension for travelers ready for guided 4WD logistics, substantial distances and higher costs.
Perth, Fremantle and Rottnest without a car
4 daysPerth and Fremantle (3 days) → Rottnest Island / Wadjemup (1 day)
The right answer for a short first visit. Use Perth and Fremantle as one easy urban base, then make Rottnest a full day rather than cramming it between city sights. Do not pretend four days is enough to road-trip regional WA.

9 daysPerth and Fremantle (2 days) → Margaret River, Yallingup, Dunsborough and Augusta (3 days) → Pemberton, Manjimup and the Southern Forests (1 day) → Denmark and Albany / Kinjarling (3 days)
For travelers who want WA's most satisfying self-drive circuit: proper time for wineries and beaches, a deliberate forest break, then Denmark's coves and Albany's harder-edged coast. It works because it stops treating the long drives as sightseeing.

12 daysPerth and Fremantle (2 days) → Margaret River, Yallingup, Dunsborough and Augusta (3 days) → Pemberton, Manjimup and the Southern Forests (1 day) → Denmark and Albany / Kinjarling (2 days) → Esperance and Cape Le Grand National Park (4 days)
For beach-focused road trippers with enough time to earn Esperance. The extra nights prevent Cape Le Grand from becoming a rushed photo stop and leave room for weather on the exposed south coast. Fly back to Perth if possible; a road-only return needs another day.
Plan this routeCoral Coast road trip to Ningaloo
13 daysPerth and Fremantle (2 days) → Kalbarri and Shark Bay / Monkey Mia (4 days) → Exmouth, Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef / Nyinggulu (7 days)
For snorkellers, wildlife travelers and patient drivers. Break the northbound journey with Kalbarri and Shark Bay, then give Ningaloo a full week to split between Coral Bay's immediate reef and Exmouth/Cape Range. Finish by flying from Learmonth rather than turning the return drive into an endurance test.
