Sydney
Base · 3–4 nights
The strongest all-purpose first stop: harbour ferries, the Opera House precinct, coastal walks and surf beaches all work without a car. Use it as the domestic-flight hub, and take the Blue Mountains as a day trip or overnight rather than pretending the city is the whole story.
Tropical North Queensland
Base · 4–6 nights
Base around Cairns or Port Douglas for the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree and Mossman Gorge—the most efficient way to combine reef and rainforest. Cairns is practical rather than charming, so the boat operator, weather and time on the water matter more than the town itself.
Uluru–Kata Tjuta
Base · 2 nights
Australia’s essential desert counterweight to the coast: a living Aṉangu cultural landscape, not a quick sunrise-photo stop. Give it time for the Cultural Centre, Uluru base walk and Kata Tjuta’s Valley of the Winds; reaching it requires a flight and usually a car or tours.
Melbourne
Base · 6 nights
Come for the country’s deepest bench of coffee, casual dining, galleries, sport and neighbourhood life, then rent a car for the Great Ocean Road. The road needs at least two nights if you want the Otways and Shipwreck Coast without spending the trip stuck behind traffic.
Tasmania
Base · 3–12 nights
A compact but not quick road-trip island of Hobart, Bruny Island, Freycinet, Cradle Mountain and cool-climate produce. It rewards a week at minimum and a car; three days here is mostly winding roads and rushed check-ins.
The Whitsundays
Base · 3 nights
Choose this over Cairns when sailing, island time and Whitehaven Beach matter more than rainforest. Airlie Beach is the budget-minded boat base, while Hamilton Island is the polished resort option; both depend heavily on weather and tour schedules.
Adelaide
A low-key, genuinely livable city that earns its place as the base for Barossa, McLaren Vale and Kangaroo Island. It is less instantly spectacular than Sydney, but much better for a slower wine-and-produce trip than a rushed capital-city checklist.
Perth
The gateway to a sunnier, less crowded version of Australia: Fremantle, Rottnest Island and Margaret River make an easy west-coast week. Its catch is geography—Perth is a major flight from the east, so do not tack it onto a short Sydney itinerary.
Darwin
A relaxed tropical launch point for Kakadu, Litchfield, wetlands and Aboriginal rock art rather than a destination to linger in for urban sightseeing. This is a dry-season road-trip choice for travelers willing to trade polish for heat, wildlife and big distances.
Ningaloo Reef and the Coral Coast
The more remote western alternative to the Great Barrier Reef, with exceptional shore-access reef and seasonal whale-shark encounters around Exmouth. It is better for confident self-drivers and wildlife-first travelers than for anyone trying to squeeze in a casual side trip from Perth.
Classic first trip: harbour, desert and reef
10 nightsSydney (4 nights) → Uluru–Kata Tjuta (2 nights) → Tropical North Queensland (4 nights)
The cleanest first Australia itinerary: Sydney gives you the urban entry point, Uluru supplies the cultural and desert contrast, and Tropical North Queensland finishes with reef and rainforest. It needs two domestic flights; do not dilute it by adding Melbourne.
Plan this routeSoutheast food, coast and wilderness
12 nightsSydney (3 nights) → Melbourne (6 nights) → Tasmania (3 nights)
For people who care more about restaurants, coffee, galleries, wine and dramatic southern scenery than tropical water. Use Melbourne's six nights to include a two-night Great Ocean Road loop, then fly to Hobart rather than wasting the trip on a giant self-drive transfer.
Plan this routeQueensland coast without pretending it is compact
14 nightsBrisbane (2 nights) → Noosa/Sunshine Coast (3 nights) → The Whitsundays (3 nights) → Tropical North Queensland (6 nights)
A water-first route for beaches, sailing and the reef. Brisbane to Noosa works overland, but fly onward to the Whitsundays and Cairns/Port Douglas unless driving long distances is the actual point; the Queensland coast is far bigger than it looks on a map.
Plan this routeTasmania properly
10–12 nightsTasmania (10–12 nights)
Rent a car and make this a real island circuit: Hobart and Bruny or the Tasman Peninsula, then Freycinet, the east coast, Launceston/Tamar Valley and Cradle Mountain. This is the right choice for walkers, wildlife and cool-climate food; anything shorter than a week is mostly winding-road logistics.
