Graz
Base · 1–3 nights
The essential urban stop: a compact old town under the Schlossberg, strong museums and contemporary architecture, and the region’s best concentration of Styrian food and wine. It is also the only genuinely practical base without a car.
South Styrian Wine Country
Base · 2–3 nights
Base around Gamlitz, Ehrenhausen or Leutschach for vineyard roads, serious Sauvignon Blanc and Buschenschank lunches. Stay two nights rather than trying to taste and drive back to Graz in one day.
Schladming-Dachstein
Base · 3–4 nights
Styria’s most useful mountain base, pairing Schladming’s rail access and evening life with Ramsau’s trails, cross-country skiing and limestone scenery. It is well set up, sometimes to the point of feeling like a resort machine.
Thermen- & Vulkanland
Base · 2 nights
Eastern Styria’s best car-based food-and-spa circuit: Riegersburg Castle, Zotter chocolate, cured ham producers and thermal bathing around Loipersdorf. The attractions are scattered, so treat it as a two-night driving stop rather than a Graz day trip.
Ausseerland
Base · 2 nights
Use Bad Aussee, Grundlsee or Altaussee for quieter lake-and-mountain country than the Hallstatt circuit. It is for walks, swims and slow days, not for covering the rest of Styria efficiently.
Gesäuse and Admont
Base · 1–2 nights
A rugged Enns valley pairing serious limestone hiking, climbing and rafting with Admont Abbey’s remarkable library. Give it dedicated time; trailheads and weather make it a poor add-on from Graz.
Western Styria and Schilcherland
The quieter wine country west of Graz, with Piber’s Lipizzaners, Deutschlandsberg’s hills and tart Schilcher wine. Choose it for a low-key road trip, not as a substitute for South Styria’s headline vineyard scenery.
Mariazell and the Hochschwab Fringe
A slower northern corner centered on Mariazell’s basilica, forest walks and old-fashioned mountain atmosphere. Go deliberately for pilgrimage culture or quiet walking, not because it fits neatly into a south-Styria itinerary.
Murtal and the Red Bull Ring
Spielberg and the Mur valley matter most for motorsport, with Murau adding brewing heritage and alpine backroads. Outside race weekends it is a pleasant detour rather than a core first-visit stop.
Eastern Styria and Almenland
Base · 2 nights
Fruit country, gentle uplands and family-friendly lake days around Weiz, Pöllau, Stubenbergsee and Teichalm. It works best as a scenic self-drive detour between Graz and the thermal east.
First Styria: city, wine and mountains
9 daysGraz (3 nights) → South Styrian Wine Country (2 nights) → Schladming-Dachstein (3 nights)
The right first trip if you want Styria’s three strongest contrasts without hotel-hopping: Graz for city life, two settled nights among the vineyards, then a proper mountain finish. Use a car for the wine-country leg and allow the transfer north to consume most of a day.
Plan this routeFood, castle and thermal reset
7 daysGraz (2 nights) → Thermen- & Vulkanland (2 nights) → South Styrian Wine Country (2 nights)
For travelers who would rather eat, taste and soak than chase alpine summits. Graz gives it an urban opening; Vulkanland covers Riegersburg, Zotter and a real spa day; South Styria closes with vineyard lunches and selective tastings. This is a car trip, full stop.
Plan this routeNorthern Styria at a sensible pace
10 daysSchladming-Dachstein (4 nights) → Gesäuse and Admont (2 nights) → Ausseerland (2 nights) → Graz (1 night)
A mountain-and-lakes route for hikers, climbers and scenery-first travelers who do not want to pretend the alpine north is a Graz day trip. Schladming is the active base, Gesäuse adds serious limestone country and Admont Abbey, and Ausseerland slows the pace before an easy final night in Graz.

For a two-week first or second visit with a car and no appetite for rushing. It deliberately holds three-night clusters in Graz, wine country and Schladming, then uses the east as a food-and-landscape bridge before finishing in the rugged north.
