Duncan Town
Base · 1–3 days
The only settlement and the only sensible shore base: harbor, airstrip, basic supplies, a couple of places to eat or drink, and the people who make the island more than empty water and sand.
Duncan Town Salt Ponds
The working salt landscape running through Duncan Town is the island’s clearest link to its salt-harvesting past. Visit with local permission rather than treating active family plots as an open-air museum.
Hog Cay
Base · 1–2 days
The nearest easy boat outing from Duncan Town and the chain’s closest approximation of a social beach stop: picnic sand, birdlife and, at the right time, bonfires and local gatherings.
Gun Point and Pigeon Cay
Short stop · 1 day
A minor but worthwhile boat stop near Great Ragged Island, with offshore scenery and Pigeon Cay’s memorial cross for Bishop Henry Norris Churton. Go for a quiet half-day, not a marquee attraction.
Southern Jumentos Cays
Base · 2–3 days
The real transition into wilderness north of Hog Cay: shallow flats for bonefishing, empty beaches and reef or blue-water fishing. It needs a competent skipper, because tide and wind—not a timetable—decide the day.
Double-Breasted Cay
Short stop · 1 day
One of the more varied Jumentos stops, combining snorkeling, a cave and a short hike in one uninhabited-cay day. It earns its place on a liveaboard rather than a rushed day trip from Duncan Town.
Flamingo Cay
Base · 2 days
A northern Jumentos objective for liveaboards, known for a cave approached by dinghy. It is a proper expedition stop, not somewhere to attempt independently in a paddle craft.
Little Ragged Island and the Southern Outer Islands
The raw southern fringe of the group, worth the run for fishing water and end-of-the-archipelago isolation. There are no facilities, so this is strictly private-boat or specialist-charter territory.
Duncan Town first visit
5 days / 4 nightsDuncan Town (2 days) → Hog Cay (1 day) → Gun Point and Pigeon Cay (1 day)
For travelers with confirmed lodging, a charter flight and a boat operator already arranged. Keep Duncan Town as the base, use Hog Cay for the straightforward beach-and-picnic day, and treat Gun Point and Pigeon Cay as the quieter weather-dependent outing. Four nights leaves useful slack; trying to force the Jumentos into this trip is bad planning.

7 days / 6 nightsDuncan Town (3 days) → Hog Cay (1 day) → Gun Point and Pigeon Cay (1 day) → Southern Jumentos Cays (2 days)
For anglers, photographers and travelers who can handle days dictated by wind rather than a schedule. Duncan Town remains the only shore base; the other stops are boat days. The two-day Southern Jumentos allocation is deliberately conditional—use it for flats, fishing and empty beaches only when the skipper considers the run sensible.

10 days / 9 nightsDuncan Town (1 day) → Hog Cay (2 days) → Southern Jumentos Cays (3 days) → Double-Breasted Cay (1 day) → Flamingo Cay (2 days) → Duncan Town (1 day)
For crewed-charter clients and experienced sailors, not independent boat renters. This is the only route that makes the full north-to-south chain genuinely worthwhile: start with provisioning and briefing in Duncan Town, work north through the flats and anchorages, then return south with a weather buffer. Double-Breasted Cay and Flamingo Cay are proper liveaboard stops, not ambitious Duncan Town day trips.
