Montréal
Base · 1–3 days
Québec’s best city for food, live music, museums and neighbourhood life; stay beyond Old Montréal for the Plateau, Mile End, Little Burgundy and Jean-Talon Market. It is the obvious first base if you are not renting a car.
Québec City
Base · 1–4 days
Old Québec’s walls and steep riverfront lanes deliver the province’s clearest historical setting, but Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Saint-Roch and Montcalm keep it from becoming a pure heritage set. Add Wendake for a substantive Huron-Wendat cultural visit rather than treating it as an Old Québec attraction.
Charlevoix
Base · 2 days
Base in Baie-Saint-Paul or La Malbaie for Québec’s strongest short food-and-landscape drive: river views, hikes, farms, cheese, cider and serious local restaurants. Give it two nights minimum; it is too good to reduce to a rushed day trip from Québec City.
Tadoussac and the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park
Base · 2 days
This is the practical whale-watching base where the Saguenay Fjord meets the St. Lawrence. Come for shore viewing at Cap de Bon-Désir, boat trips and the water-meets-cliff landscape, not for a long stay in the small village.
Saguenay Fjord and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean
Base · 3–4 days
A proper car-trip region for fjord hiking, kayaking and quiet bases such as L’Anse-Saint-Jean or Sainte-Rose-du-Nord, with lake beaches and regional food around Lac Saint-Jean. It rewards three or more nights and is a better nature extension than trying to force Gaspésie into a short trip.
Eastern Townships
Base · 2 days
The easiest rural escape from Montréal: base around Sutton, Knowlton, Bromont or Magog for cideries, vineyards, village cafés, cycling and Mont-Orford hikes. It is a compact two-to-four-day drive, not a place to chase grand scenery.
Laurentians
Montréal’s most convenient mountain-and-lake escape, with Mont-Tremblant as the useful hub for skiing, hiking and fall colour. Skip the resort village for overnight stays if you want quieter trails, lakes and less polished scenery.
Mauricie and La Mauricie National Park
A sensible forest-and-lake reset between Montréal and Québec City, with canoeing, swimming, cabins and accessible hikes. It is pleasant rather than essential, so use it when you have a car and an extra night or two.
Bas-Saint-Laurent
Short stop · 1 day
Base near Rimouski or Parc national du Bic for tidal coves, headland walks and a quieter St. Lawrence coast. It works best as a slow one- or two-night pause on a Gaspésie drive.
Gaspésie
Base · 7 days
Québec’s defining long road trip: use separate bases in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, Gaspé or Forillon, and Percé rather than attempting peninsula-wide day trips. The payoff is sea cliffs, mountain hiking, fishing villages, Percé Rock and Forillon’s end-of-the-road feel.
Îles-de-la-Madeleine
A distinct Gulf of St. Lawrence trip built around beaches, red cliffs, cycling, seafood and wind-exposed island weather. Give it five to seven nights and treat flights, ferry space and local transport as core planning constraints, not details.
Essential first Québec trip
7 daysMontréal (3 days) → Québec City (4 days)
The right first trip if you do not want a car. Montréal supplies the food, neighbourhoods and culture; Québec City delivers the historic contrast. Take the train between them and do not waste this week trying to add Gaspésie.

9 daysMontréal (3 days) → Eastern Townships (2 days) → Québec City (2 days) → Charlevoix (2 days)
Pick up the rental car only when leaving Montréal. This is the compact choice for cideries and vineyards, then Québec City, then a proper two-night Charlevoix finish in Baie-Saint-Paul or La Malbaie.

A car-only nature route that gives weather-dependent whale and kayak days some slack. Base Charlevoix in Baie-Saint-Paul or La Malbaie, then use Tadoussac for marine wildlife and L’Anse-Saint-Jean, Sainte-Rose-du-Nord or Saguenay for the fjord.

14 daysMontréal (1 day) → Québec City (2 days) → Bas-Saint-Laurent (1 day) → Gaspésie (7 days) → Bas-Saint-Laurent (1 day) → Québec City (1 day) → Montréal (1 day)
This is the minimum sensible shape for the peninsula: pause near Rimouski or Bic, then split Gaspésie across Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, Gaspé or Forillon, and Percé. The return stops are deliberate—this is a long drive, and pretending it is not makes the whole route worse.
