Xining
Base · 1–2 days
Qinghai’s practical gateway and the only base that makes sense for arrival, acclimatization, food and transport logistics. Use it for Hui Muslim food streets, Dongguan Mosque, museums and a night before heading higher.
Qinghai Lake
Base · 2 days
The province’s essential open-road landscape: a vast blue lake, grassland, prayer flags and big-sky weather at over 3,000m. Treat it as a multi-stop circuit, with Heimahe the useful west-shore overnight, rather than a rushed Xining day trip.
Chaka Salt Lake
Short stop · 1 day
White salt crust and shallow-water reflections can be spectacular when light and weather cooperate. It is also heavily staged and crowded, so stay in Chaka or Heimahe rather than attempting it as a punishing return trip from Xining.
Huangzhong & Kumbum Monastery
Short stop · 1 day
Kumbum (Ta’er) is Qinghai’s most accessible major Tibetan Buddhist monastery and the sensible first cultural stop from Xining. Give it unhurried time; it is far better paired with an Xining overnight than squeezed into a transfer day.
Tongren / Rebkong
Base · 2 days
Qinghai’s strongest Tibetan cultural base, centered on Rongwo Monastery, nearby Wutun villages and living Regong thangka traditions. Come to spend time with working religious and artistic culture, not to collect monastery photos.
Menyuan & the Qilian Mountains
Base · 4 days
The green, pastoral counterweight to the lake-and-salt circuit: high valleys, grazing land and snow peaks, with Menyuan’s rapeseed fields peaking in July. Overnight in Qilian town for the mountain side; Menyuan itself is mainly a seasonal landscape stop.
Kanbula
Short stop · 1 day
Red danxia cliffs and Yellow River reservoir scenery give Qinghai a sharper, more dramatic palette than its grasslands. It works best as a transport-dependent extension from Tongren, with an early start and current park shuttle or boat arrangements confirmed.
Yushu / Jiegu
Base · 3 days
A remote, high-altitude Tibetan city with monasteries, mani-stone culture and a far less packaged feel than the Xining–lake corridor. Fly in when possible and give it several nights; this is a destination, not a side trip.
Golmud & the Qaidam Fringe
Golmud is an industrial but useful western hub for travelers drawn to railways, salt-desert scale and the edge of the Qaidam Basin. Go only with confirmed local logistics: access rules for remote routes and protected or sensitive areas can be restrictive and inconsistent.
Hoh Xil / Kekexili
This immense Tibetan-antelope wilderness is one of Qinghai’s defining landscapes, but it is not a DIY safari or camping destination. Experience it only from legal transport corridors or approved arrangements; do not build a first trip around entering the reserve.
Classic lake-and-salt first visit
7 daysXining (2 days) → Huangzhong & Kumbum Monastery (1 day) → Qinghai Lake (2 days) → Chaka Salt Lake (1 day) → Xining (1 day)
The right first Qinghai trip: acclimatize in Xining, see Kumbum properly, then move through the lake circuit rather than trying to day-trip Chaka from the capital. Use Heimahe as the practical Qinghai Lake overnight base and keep the final Xining night as a buffer.

For travelers who would rather balance landscapes with living Tibetan culture than spend the whole trip chasing viewpoints. The backtrack through Xining is deliberate: Qinghai's transport works as spokes from the capital, not as a clean touring loop.

9 daysXining (2 days) → Menyuan & the Qilian Mountains (4 days) → Qinghai Lake (2 days) → Xining (1 day)
A scenery-first route for self-drivers and repeat visitors. Give the Menyuan–Qilian section real time rather than treating it as a quick rapeseed-field detour; overnight in Qilian town for the mountain portion, then finish with the lake's north, east and west shores. Best in July for flowers, or September for clearer, quieter mountain light.

The fullest workable two-week route without pretending Qinghai is compact. It combines the classic lake corridor, Rebkong's art culture and Kanbula's gorge scenery before flying to Yushu for a genuinely different, more Tibetan high-plateau experience. Do not dilute it by adding Golmud or remote Qaidam.
