The Bund, Huangpu and People’s Square
Base · 1–3 days
Shanghai’s essential first-day circuit: Bund facades, the riverfront view of Pudong, People’s Square museums and the old-city fringe around Yu Garden. Expect crowds; use it for the big visual contrast, not quiet wandering.
Former French Concession and Xuhui
Base · 1–3 days
The best part of Shanghai to explore without a checklist: plane-tree streets, lane houses, Wukang Road side streets, cafés and the Xuhui riverfront. It is also the strongest central base for dinners and evenings on foot.
Jing’an and West Nanjing Road
Short stop · 1 day
A polished, central district with Jing’an Temple, strong hotels, serious dining and easy metro access. Choose it when you want convenience and comfort over the messier character of Huangpu.
Lujiazui, Pudong Riverfront and the Expo Museum Belt
Short stop · 1 day
Go for Shanghai Tower, Jin Mao, the Oriental Pearl, Shanghai Museum East and oversized riverside urbanism. Spend a day here, but do not stay only here: after office hours, much of Lujiazui feels empty.
Zhujiajiao Water Town
Short stop · 1 day
The municipality’s most practical canal-town trip, reachable by metro and worth a half- to full-day escape from the towers. Go early; its bridges and lanes are charming, but weekends turn the old town into a commercial crush.
Shanghai Disney Resort and Chuansha
Base · 2 days
A full-day destination rather than a central-Shanghai add-on, with one of Asia’s most polished Disney parks. Stay nearby if Disney is a priority or if you have an early Pudong Airport flight; otherwise commute once and keep your main base central.
Songjiang and Sheshan
Short stop · 1 day
Shanghai’s low-key green fringe: modest wooded hills, the Sheshan basilica, parks and oddball Thames Town. It works as a relaxed second-visit day, not as a substitute for real mountain scenery.
Chongming Island
Base · 2 days
The best nature break within Shanghai, with wetlands, birdlife, farms and cycling routes that feel remarkably far from the Bund. It is spread out and slow to reach, so an overnight is smarter than trying to tick it off between city sights.
Lingang and Dishui Lake
Short stop · 1 day
A far-southeastern planned city of huge skies, broad promenades and circular Dishui Lake, with Haichang Ocean Park for families. Go for contemporary urbanism or an overnight near the water, not for a conventional beach holiday.
Jinshan and Fengjing
Fengjing offers a quieter, less polished water-town alternative to Zhujiajiao, while Jinshan shows the municipality’s rural and coastal edge. Pick this for slower local texture; on a first trip, choose it or Zhujiajiao, not both.
First Shanghai, no overreach
4 daysThe Bund, Huangpu and People’s Square (1 day) → Former French Concession and Xuhui (1 day) → Lujiazui, Pudong Riverfront and the Expo Museum Belt (1 day) → Zhujiajiao Water Town (1 day)
The right first-timer circuit: historic riverfront and old-city texture, the best walking neighborhoods, Pudong’s vertical spectacle, then one canal-town day trip. Base centrally throughout; trying to add Disney or Chongming would turn four days into transit.

For a first visit that does not treat Shanghai as a checklist. It leaves proper time for museums, food and evening wandering in the central districts, while keeping the only outer excursion to the easy, worthwhile one.

A family-focused version that gives Disney the time it actually needs instead of forcing it into a rushed central-city day. Finish in Lingang for Haichang Ocean Park or a low-key waterside overnight; it is a planned-city curiosity, not a beach break.

For repeat visitors, urbanists and travelers who genuinely want to see the municipality beyond the skyline. Chongming earns an overnight; Songjiang is a gentle green break; Lingang is worth one night only if its futuristic, slightly eerie planned landscape appeals to you.
