Beijing and the Great Wall
Base · 4 days
The essential imperial-capital stop: Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, hutongs and a full day on the Wall. Give it four full days; security lines, distances and crowds make a supposedly quick sightseeing day sprawl.
Xi'an
Base · 2 days
Xi'an earns its place with the Terracotta Army, city walls and a Silk Road-inflected food scene built around noodles, breads and cumin-heavy lamb. Three nights is enough for the core unless you are adding Huashan.
Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou
Base · 2–3 days
This is polished lower-Yangtze China: Shanghai's modern urban edge, Suzhou's gardens and canals, and Hangzhou's lake-and-tea-country calm. Use Shanghai as the base, then add Suzhou or Hangzhou rather than trying to turn all three into separate expeditions.
Chengdu and Sichuan
Base · 3 days
Chengdu is the best antidote to a rushed monument circuit: tea houses, serious Sichuan food, opera and pandas, with Leshan and Mount Emei within reach. Stay three nights before heading into western Sichuan or elsewhere.
Guilin, Yangshuo and Longji
Base · 3 days
The Li River karst and Longji terraces are the southern-China landscape people come expecting. Base in Yangshuo rather than Guilin, but accept that its center is touristy and mist can erase the views.
Zhangjiajie and western Hunan
Sandstone pillars, forest trails and huge vertical drops make this China's most visually singular scenic area. It needs three full nights and patience for weather, queues and the cable-car-heavy infrastructure.
Yunnan: Dali, Lijiang and Tiger Leaping Gorge
Base · 10 days
China's strongest slow-travel region combines highland weather, excellent food, lakeside Dali, commercial-but-beautiful Lijiang and a genuinely worthwhile trek at Tiger Leaping Gorge. Give it a week or more; the distances are not casual.
Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta
Come primarily to eat: dim sum, roast meats, seafood and old Cantonese commercial culture, with Shenzhen close by for a sharper tech-and-design contrast. It rewards curiosity more than checklist sightseeing.
Chongqing
Base · 2 days
A steep, river-cut metropolis of layered highways, stair streets, neon and ferocious hot pot. It pairs cleanly with Chengdu by fast train, but one or two nights is enough unless you are cruising the Yangtze or visiting Dazu.
Xinjiang: Turpan, Kashgar and the Pamirs
For a second trip, this is the major departure from eastern China: oasis archaeology, bazaars, Central Asian food, deserts and vast mountain roads. Plan 10–14 days, expect long transfers, and do not treat changing access rules as a minor detail.
Classic first visit
10 daysBeijing and the Great Wall (4 days) → Xi'an (2 days) → Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou (3 days)
The cleanest first-timer spine: imperial capital, ancient Silk Road capital, then modern coastal China. Take high-speed rail from Beijing to Xi'an; fly Xi'an to Shanghai if time matters. The spare day is absorbed by transfers, station security and arrival evenings—China is not a place to schedule as if trains stop outside your hotel.
Plan this routeImperial China, Sichuan food and Shanghai
12 daysBeijing and the Great Wall (4 days) → Xi'an (2 days) → Chengdu and Sichuan (3 days) → Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou (3 days)
For travelers who want more than monuments. Beijing and Xi'an establish the historical backbone; Chengdu slows the pace with tea houses, pandas and properly serious food before Shanghai supplies the urban contrast. Rail works for Beijing-Xi'an; Xi'an-Chengdu and Chengdu-Shanghai are usually better treated as flight legs. Do not dilute this with a rushed Chongqing or Guilin detour.
Plan this routeCities plus the Guangxi landscapes
14 daysBeijing and the Great Wall (4 days) → Xi'an (2 days) → Chengdu and Sichuan (3 days) → Guilin, Yangshuo and Longji (3 days) → Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou (2 days)
This is the maximum sensible two-week first trip: big-history north, Sichuan's food culture, then karst country before finishing in Shanghai. It works only if you fly Xi'an-Chengdu, Chengdu-Guilin and Guilin-Shanghai, and sleep in Yangshuo rather than central Guilin. Shanghai gets a sharp, functional two-night finish, not a leisurely city break.
Plan this routeSouthwest China: food, river cities and highlands
15 daysChengdu and Sichuan (3 days) → Chongqing (2 days) → Yunnan: Dali, Lijiang and Tiger Leaping Gorge (10 days)
A far better choice than a frantic national highlights reel for repeat visitors. Chengdu and Chongqing are an easy fast-rail pairing, but Chongqing to Yunnan is a flight decision; once there, slow down for Dali, Lijiang and Tiger Leaping Gorge rather than treating the highlands as a chain of one-night stops. Keep some flexibility for mountain weather, altitude and long road transfers.
