Things to Do in Turbaná — Bolívar: Top Attractions, Tours & Tickets

#1Barrio Getsemaní Cartagena BolívarMust4.7(575)

Getsemaní is Cartagena’s most rewarding counterpoint to the polished walled core: street art, lived-in streets, bars, and an evening social life centered on its plazas. Wander without a rigid route, then return after dark for atmosphere while keeping ordinary city awareness.

2h FreeWalk it in late afternoon and stay into evening, when the neighborhood comes alive.

Pairs with: Plaza de la Trinidad · Centenario Park (Tourist attraction) · Monumento Torre del Reloj

#2San Felipe de Barajas Fort (Tourist attraction)Must

This is Cartagena’s defining military monument and the clearest expression of why the city became so heavily fortified. Explore the ramps and tunnels at your own pace, but go prepared for exposed heat and uneven surfaces.

1.7h Walk upBe there at opening; the fort becomes punishingly hot by late morning.

Buy tickets on arrival; a guide is optional, but useful if you want the defensive-system story.

Pairs with: Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa · Monumento Torre del Reloj · Cartagena's Walled City and Walls

#3Monumento Torre del RelojMust4.7(38,000)

The clock tower is the symbolic gateway to the walled city and the most useful orientation point for a first walk through Cartagena. It is a brief stop, but it belongs at the start or end of an old-city circuit rather than as a stand-alone attraction.

15m FreePhotograph it early morning or after sunset, when traffic and heat ease.

Pairs with: Cartagena's Walled City and Walls · Barrio Getsemaní Cartagena Bolívar · Centenario Park (Tourist attraction)

#4Cartagena's Walled City and WallsMust

The walled city is the essential first-timer experience: a compact maze of colonial streets, balconies, plazas, churches, and sea-facing ramparts. Do not reduce it to a checklist—give it an unstructured walk by day and another around sunset, using the listed museums and plazas as anchors.

3h FreeStart early for quiet streets, then walk the walls close to sunset for cooler temperatures.

Pairs with: Monumento Torre del Reloj · Las Bóvedas · Plaza de Santo Domingo

#5Las BóvedasShould4.5(8,600)

These former vaults built into Cartagena’s walls are more worthwhile as a short atmospheric walk and photo stop than as a shopping destination. Use them while tracing the northern edge of the old city, then continue along the ramparts rather than making a special long visit.

25m FreeGo early or near sunset, when the wall walk is cooler and the light is better.

Pairs with: Cartagena's Walled City and Walls · Plaza de San Diego · Catedral de Santa Catalina de Alejandría

#6Convent of Santa Cruz de la PopaShould4.6(5,300)

The hilltop convent earns its place for the broad look over Cartagena, its harbor, and the surrounding lowlands rather than for a lengthy interior visit. Take a taxi or arranged ride up and combine it with San Felipe, not with a walking loop in the old city.

50m Walk upVisit in the morning before heat and haze build.

Buy admission on arrival; arrange round-trip transport rather than expecting to walk up comfortably.

Pairs with: San Felipe de Barajas Fort (Tourist attraction) · Monumento Torre del Reloj

#7Catedral de Santa Catalina de AlejandríaShould4.8(2,800)

The cathedral’s distinctive tower makes it one of the essential visual anchors of the old city, and its location makes a quick look effortless. Step inside if open, but prioritize the surrounding plazas and streets over waiting for access.

20m FreeSee it in the early morning, before the plaza area becomes busy.

Pairs with: Plaza de Santo Domingo · Plaza de San Diego · Cartagena's Walled City and Walls

#8Museo del Oro ZenúShould4.6(1,400)

This small gold museum provides the Indigenous Zenú context that is easy to miss in a Cartagena itinerary dominated by colonial history. It is free, focused, and ideal for a short cultural stop rather than a museum marathon.

40m FreeDrop in near opening or during the midday heat.

Pairs with: Plaza de Santo Domingo · Catedral de Santa Catalina de Alejandría · Museum of Cartagena de Indias (Tourist attraction)

#9Museum of Cartagena de Indias (Tourist attraction)Should

Set in the former Inquisition palace, this museum adds difficult but important context on colonial power, religious persecution, and the city’s past. It is best for visitors who want more than a photogenic old town; allow time to read selectively rather than trying to absorb every display.

1.3h Walk upVisit at opening or in the early afternoon for a break from heat.

Walk-up entry is generally sufficient.

Pairs with: Museo del Oro Zenú · Plaza de Santo Domingo · Museo Naval del Caribe

#10Plaza de la TrinidadShould4.7(13,000)

This is Getsemaní’s social heart, where street food, performers, locals, and visitors gather in the evening. Visit for people-watching and a casual meal, not for a formal sightseeing stop or quiet contemplation.

1h FreeGo after sunset, when the square has its best energy.

Pairs with: Barrio Getsemaní Cartagena Bolívar · Centenario Park (Tourist attraction) · Monumento Torre del Reloj

#11Plaza de Santo DomingoShould4.6(11,000)

One of the old city’s most animated squares, it works as a convenient stop for the church, sculpture, cafés, and people-watching. Prices at the most prominent terraces can be high, so use it for a drink or a stroll rather than treating it as Cartagena’s best-value meal stop.

40m FreeLate afternoon offers shade and atmosphere before the dinner rush.

Pairs with: Museo del Oro Zenú · Museum of Cartagena de Indias (Tourist attraction) · Catedral de Santa Catalina de Alejandría

#12Islas del RosarioShould

The Rosario islands provide the classic Caribbean-water escape from Cartagena, but the quality of the day depends heavily on boat, beach, and operator choice. Commit a full day only if beach and swimming are priorities; otherwise Cartagena’s historic core deserves the time.

7h Book aheadTake an early departure to maximize beach time and reduce exposure to afternoon sea conditions.

Book a reputable boat or organized day trip ahead, particularly on weekends and in high season.

Pairs with: Bora Bora Cartagena · Capri Beach Club Cartagena

#13Museo Naval del CaribeIf time4.6(3,900)

This is a compact, useful stop for travelers who want the naval and maritime context behind Cartagena’s fortifications and port. It is best used as an air-conditioned hour between the waterfront and the walled city, not as a must-see museum for everyone.

1h Walk upGo around midday, when the shaded indoor visit is most welcome.

Walk-up admission is normally practical.

Pairs with: Cartagena's Walled City and Walls · Museum of Cartagena de Indias (Tourist attraction) · Monumento Torre del Reloj

#14Aviario Nacional de Colombia (Tourist attraction)If time

Colombia’s national aviary is a strong nature-focused excursion, especially for families or anyone who wants a break from colonial architecture and city heat. It is outside Cartagena, so give it a dedicated half-day rather than squeezing it into an old-city itinerary.

2.5h Book aheadArrive near opening, before tour groups and the hottest part of the day.

Reserve transport or a tour ahead in busy periods; admission itself is usually straightforward.

Pairs with: Islas del Rosario · Bora Bora Cartagena

#15Centenario Park (Tourist attraction)If time

This small central park is chiefly a convenient green pause between the walled city and Getsemaní, with a chance of spotting resident wildlife. Treat it as a walk-through rather than a destination that consumes valuable first-timer time.

20m FreeUse it in daylight; it is most pleasant in the cooler morning or late afternoon.

Pairs with: Barrio Getsemaní Cartagena Bolívar · Plaza de la Trinidad · Monumento Torre del Reloj

#16Volcan de Lodo El TotumoIf time4.3(3,200)

The mud-volcano soak is a quirky, messy regional outing and a memorable story, but it is not essential Cartagena culture. Go with realistic expectations about basic facilities, crowds, and the time spent getting there.

2h Book aheadChoose an early departure to avoid peak heat and the busiest tour arrivals.

Book transport or a small-group tour ahead, especially if you do not have a car.

Pairs with: Aviario Nacional de Colombia (Tourist attraction)

#17Bora Bora CartagenaIf time4.3(1,800)

Bora Bora is an island beach-club day rather than an independent historic sight, suited to travelers who value swimming, lunch, and a managed beach setup. It can be enjoyable, but it should not replace time in the old city on a short first visit.

6h Book aheadTake an early boat, before day-trip crowds and afternoon weather risks.

Reserve boat transport and entry ahead for weekends and high season.

Pairs with: Islas del Rosario · Capri Beach Club Cartagena

#18Plaza de San DiegoIf time4.7(327)

This handsome small square is one of the walled city’s best places to slow down between major sights and notice the domestic scale of colonial Cartagena. It is more of a pause on a walking route than an appointment destination.

25m FreeCome in the cooler late afternoon, then continue toward the walls for sunset.

Pairs with: Las Bóvedas · Catedral de Santa Catalina de Alejandría · Cartagena's Walled City and Walls

#19Capri Beach Club CartagenaNiche4.9(1,500)

This is a leisure-day beach-club choice, not a defining Cartagena sight. Consider it only if you specifically want reserved beach seating and service rather than a cultural or island excursion.

4h Book aheadArrive early for a quieter beach and better choice of seating.

Reserve ahead for weekends, holidays, and preferred seating.

Pairs with: Bora Bora Cartagena · Islas del Rosario
