Cartagena
Base · 1–5 nights
The indispensable first base: use the Walled City for colonial streets, walls and San Felipe, and Getsemaní for better night energy and less polished street life. Bocagrande is useful for big hotels and pools, but not the reason to come.
Rosario Islands
Base · 2 nights
Bolívar’s best choice for clear water, snorkeling and an actual break from Cartagena. Skip the rushed multi-island circuits; base on Isla Grande overnight if the sea is a priority.
Barú and Playa Blanca
Base · 2 nights
Come for the white sand and stay overnight if possible; Playa Blanca is at its best before the day boats arrive and after they leave. A midday visit alone is usually noisy, crowded and not worth building a trip around.
San Basilio de Palenque
A serious cultural day trip from Cartagena, not a staged stop for photographs. Go with a community-connected guide to understand Palenquero language, music, food and the town’s history as a settlement founded by escaped enslaved people.
Tierra Bomba and Bocachica
The closest island escape from Cartagena, with Bocachica’s Fort San Fernando adding real defensive-history context. Choose it for a short boat ride and bay views, not for a pristine-beach fantasy.
Santa Cruz de Mompox
Base · 3 nights
A slow, river-facing colonial town with arcaded streets, churches, filigree workshops and strong dusk-on-the-Albarrada appeal. It needs at least two full nights and is worth the long transfer only if you are prepared to decelerate.
San Jacinto
Base · 2 nights
The strongest Montes de María stop for gaita, drums, hammock weaving and instrument-making. It is a rewarding cultural detour, but arrange transport and workshops locally rather than improvising rural travel.
Montes de María
Rural Caribbean Bolívar beyond Cartagena: music traditions, hammocks, cassava-and-corn cooking and community-led cultural experiences. Best approached through San Jacinto with current local advice and a credible operator.
Cartagena, done properly
5 nightsCartagena (5 nights)
The right first Bolívar trip if you have less than a week. Use one Cartagena base for the Walled City, Getsemaní and San Felipe, then take one cultural day to San Basilio de Palenque and one focused sea day to either the Rosario Islands or Tierra Bomba and Bocachica. Do not trade this solid itinerary for a rushed Mompox detour.

8 nightsCartagena (4 nights) → Rosario Islands (2 nights) → Cartagena (2 nights)
For travelers who want Cartagena’s food, architecture and night energy without reducing the coast to a loud day-boat circuit. Stay on Isla Grande rather than hopping between islands, leave one full day unplanned, then return to Cartagena before flying.
Plan this routeThe full Bolívar first trip
12 nightsCartagena (4 nights) → Barú and Playa Blanca (2 nights) → Cartagena (1 night) → Santa Cruz de Mompox (3 nights) → Cartagena (2 nights)
A deliberately unhurried first pass through Bolívar’s three distinct worlds: Cartagena, the coast and the Magdalena river country. The Cartagena nights before and after Mompox are not wasted—they make the long inland transfer workable and protect your flight plans.
Plan this routeMusic, craft and river country
10-12 nightsCartagena (4 nights) → San Jacinto (2 nights) → Santa Cruz de Mompox (3 nights) → Cartagena (1-3 nights)
For repeat visitors who would rather hear gaita, meet hammock weavers and spend time in river-country Mompox than add another beach day. Arrange San Jacinto transport and workshops through credible local operators, travel by day, and keep the final Cartagena buffer flexible.
