Things to Do in Munich — Bavaria: Top Attractions, Tours & Tickets

This is Munich's great urban breathing space, best experienced as a long, loose walk rather than a checklist stop. Start at the landscaped southern end for the Chinese Tower and beer garden atmosphere, then continue only as far north as your energy warrants.

2h FreeGo in the morning for quieter paths; late afternoon is best if you want the beer-garden mood.

Pairs with: Eisbachwelle (water waves) · Monopteros im Englischen Garten · Siegestor

#2Munich ResidenceMustAltstadt4.6(23,925)

The former Wittelsbach residence is the essential interior counterpoint to Munich's rebuilt old town: a sprawling sequence of state rooms, collections and courtly display. Prioritize it if you want to understand the royal city behind the beer-hall image, and allow enough time not to rush it.

2.5h Walk upArrive at opening, especially on weekends and in wet-weather season.

Buy at opening or online ahead on busy weekends to avoid the longest entry queue.

Pairs with: Odeonsplatz · Hofgarten · Alte Pinakothek

#3Nymphenburg PalaceMustNymphenburg4.6(40,949)

This is Munich's standout palace outing, built for grandeur rather than defense and set apart from the dense old town. Treat it as a dedicated half-day with time for the grounds, rather than trying to squeeze it between central sights.

3h Walk upGo near opening or late afternoon; the palace rooms are most comfortable before tour groups build.

Same-day tickets are normally practical, but book online in peak summer if you want to avoid the ticket line.

#4MarienplatzMustAltstadt4.7(157,967)

Munich's civic center is unavoidable for a first visit: it anchors the old town and provides the clearest sense of the city’s public life. Come to orient yourself and see the town hall ensemble, then move into the surrounding lanes rather than lingering in the densest crowd.

30m FreeVisit before mid-morning or after dinner; midday is busiest, especially around the Glockenspiel.

Pairs with: Rathaus-Glockenspiel · Mariensäule · Viktualienmarkt

#5FrauenkircheMustAltstadt4.6(15,980)

Its twin domed towers define Munich's skyline, making this the old town church to see even if you do not spend long inside. Pair a brief interior visit with a walk through the surrounding core rather than expecting a heavily ornate cathedral experience.

30m FreeGo shortly after opening or later in the afternoon, outside service times.

Pairs with: Marienplatz · Karlsplatz (Stachus) · Peterskirche

#6Deutsches MuseumMustAu and Deutsches Museum4.5(44,485)

This vast science and technology museum rewards curiosity far beyond the usual family-museum audience, but it is too large to do comprehensively in one visit. Choose a few subject areas that genuinely interest you and accept that this is a selective, half-day experience.

3.5h Walk upArrive at opening and head straight to your highest-priority galleries.

Online purchase can save time on busy school-holiday and rainy days, but advance booking is not usually essential.

Pairs with: Viktualienmarkt · Marienplatz · Asamkirche

#7ViktualienmarktMustAltstadt

This daily food market is the best place to make Munich's old town feel lived-in rather than purely monumental. Use it for a snack, picnic supplies or a casual beer, ideally as a break between Marienplatz and the river-island museum district.

45m FreeGo in the morning for the fullest market atmosphere and before lunchtime crowds.

Pairs with: Marienplatz · Mariensäule · Deutsches Museum

#8Alte PinakothekMustMaxvorstadt

The Alte Pinakothek is a major old-master museum and the clearest reason to devote time to Munich's Kunstareal. Choose it over trying to sample every museum in the district, then combine it with the royal architecture around Odeonsplatz.

2.5h Walk upArrive at opening or visit on a weekday afternoon for the calmest galleries.

Walk-up entry is usually fine; Sunday can be excellent value for permanent collections but may be busier.

Pairs with: Munich Residence · Odeonsplatz · Siegestor

#9Olympiapark MünchenShouldOlympiapark and Milbertshofen4.7(80,903)

The park turns Munich's 1972 Olympic legacy into an unusually good open-air outing, with its stadium architecture, lake and broad views. It is most worthwhile when you give it time to wander rather than treating it as a BMW Museum add-on.

2h FreeWeekday mornings are calmest; go later in the day for better light and a livelier atmosphere.

Pairs with: BMW Welt · BMW Museum

#10OdeonsplatzShouldAltstadt4.6(23,240)

Odeonsplatz is the hinge between the old town, the Residenz and Munich's grand royal avenues. Use it as an architectural pause and a starting point for Briennerstraße or Ludwigstraße, not as a long standalone visit.

20m FreeEarly morning makes the square easier to appreciate before traffic and tour groups arrive.

Pairs with: Munich Residence · Hofgarten · Siegestor

#11HofgartenShouldAltstadt4.7(9,992)

This compact formal garden is the graceful outdoor extension of the Residenz and a useful quiet reset in central Munich. It is worth a stroll, not a special detour, and works especially well between palace rooms and Odeonsplatz.

30m FreeMorning is quietest; weekday lunchtime can be pleasant but busier.

Pairs with: Munich Residence · Odeonsplatz · English Garden

#12Hofbräuhaus MünchenShouldAltstadt4.3(111,709)

This is the famous beer-hall experience, useful for the spectacle and communal energy rather than for a quiet or refined meal. Stop for a beer or an early meal if the iconic version of Munich appeals; otherwise, do not let the queue consume prime sightseeing time.

1.3h FreeTry an early lunch or a late-afternoon drink; evening waits are common.

Pairs with: Marienplatz · Viktualienmarkt · Munich Residence

#13BMW WeltShouldOlympiapark and Milbertshofen4.7(41,386)

BMW Welt is a striking piece of contemporary Munich architecture and a free, easy introduction to the city's automotive identity. Even non-car enthusiasts can make a short stop for the building and combine it with Olympiapark; enthusiasts should add the museum next door.

45m FreeWeekday mornings are easiest; weekends can feel like a busy showroom.

Pairs with: BMW Museum · Olympiapark München

#14Eisbachwelle (water waves)ShouldLehel4.8(23,931)

The standing-wave surfers are one of Munich's most memorable small urban scenes and a surprising contrast to the nearby royal avenues. This is a brief stop: watch for a few minutes, then continue into the English Garden.

20m FreeDaylight is essential; mornings are generally easier for watching without a crush.

Pairs with: English Garden · Monopteros im Englischen Garten · Hofgarten

#15Rathaus-GlockenspielShouldAltstadt4.7(2,361)

The Glockenspiel is a classic first-timer ritual, but it is best treated as a short bit of pageantry rather than the centerpiece of a day. Build it into your Marienplatz pass-through and use the rest of the time for the old town's churches, market and lanes.

20m FreeArrive a little before a scheduled performance if seeing it matters; otherwise visit early to avoid the viewing crowd.

Pairs with: Marienplatz · Mariensäule · Viktualienmarkt

#16BMW MuseumShouldOlympiapark and Milbertshofen4.6(49,431)

This is the stronger stop for people who want the story, design and engineering behind the BMW name, while BMW Welt is the free architectural showroom. It is a focused museum rather than a city-defining sight, but exceptionally good if cars, industrial design or motorsport interest you.

1.8h Timed entryBook or arrive near opening, before weekend visitors fill the galleries.

Reserve an online entry time for weekends, school holidays, or a fixed Olympiapark itinerary.

Pairs with: BMW Welt · Olympiapark München

#17AsamkircheShouldAltstadt

This intensely theatrical church provides the ornate Baroque counterpoint to Frauenkirche's comparatively spare scale. It is a quick visit but an unusually high-reward detour on the walk between Karlsplatz and the central old town.

20m FreeGo at opening or later in the day, avoiding service times and the midday tour flow.

Pairs with: Karlsplatz (Stachus) · Frauenkirche · Marienplatz

#18PeterskircheShouldAltstadt

St. Peter's is one of the old town's most rewarding churches and adds historical texture beyond the big-name Frauenkirche. Use it as a short interior stop while exploring around Marienplatz; go up only if the view and stairs genuinely appeal.

35m Walk upVisit shortly after opening for a quieter church and a shorter tower wait.

The church is free; tower access is paid separately and handled on site.

Pairs with: Marienplatz · Viktualienmarkt · Frauenkirche

#19Karlsplatz (Stachus)If timeAltstadt4.5(30,911)

Karlsplatz is the western gateway to the historic center and a natural place to begin a walk along the pedestrian route toward Marienplatz. It matters more as an urban threshold and people-watching stop than as a destination in itself.

15m FreePass through in the morning or evening; it is chiefly a transit hub during the day.

Pairs with: Frauenkirche · Marienplatz · Asamkirche

#20SiegestorIf timeMaxvorstadt4.6(4,777)

This triumphal arch is the northern punctuation mark of Ludwigstraße and makes most sense within a walk from Odeonsplatz into Maxvorstadt. It is a quick exterior sight, but the avenue approach gives it its real value.

15m FreeGo in the early evening, when the avenue is less harshly lit and the street scene is active.

Pairs with: Odeonsplatz · English Garden · Alte Pinakothek

#21MariensäuleIf timeAltstadt4.7(908)

The Marian column is a central visual marker in Marienplatz, not an independent destination. Notice it while taking in the square and town hall ensemble, then keep moving through the old town.

10m FreeSee it early, when it is easier to view the whole square without tour groups.

Pairs with: Marienplatz · Rathaus-Glockenspiel · Viktualienmarkt

#22Monopteros im Englischen GartenIf timeLehel4.7(3,905)

This hilltop temple is one of the English Garden's best visual payoffs, with a pleasing view back toward central Munich. Make it a waypoint on a park walk rather than traveling out solely for the structure.

20m FreeCome near sunset for the best atmosphere, though the hill is rarely empty in good weather.

Pairs with: English Garden · Eisbachwelle (water waves) · Hofgarten

#23Toy Museum MunichNicheAltstadt4.3(1,768)

This small, eccentric collection is a pleasant niche diversion in the heart of the old town, especially for families or collectors. It is not essential for most first visits, but its central location makes it easy to add when weather or interest calls for an indoor stop.

45m Walk upVisit in the morning or late afternoon if you want a quieter small-museum experience.

Walk-up admission is normally sufficient.

Pairs with: Marienplatz · Rathaus-Glockenspiel · Viktualienmarkt
