Jaipur
Base · 2–3 days
The essential first base for Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the Pink City’s markets. It is busy and traffic-heavy, but two full days here earn their place on almost any first itinerary.
Udaipur
Base · 3 days
Rajasthan’s strongest city base for lake-and-palace scenery, with enough substance for three nights rather than a rushed overnight. Use it for Lake Pichola, the City Palace and selected Mewar excursions, not as a launchpad for the entire state.
Jodhpur
Base · 2 days
Come for Mehrangarh, Rajasthan’s best fort, then stay for the blue old-city lanes, markets and serious Marwari food. It feels more like a working city than a heritage set piece and is the logical bridge between central Rajasthan and the Thar.
Jaisalmer
Base · 2–3 days
The spectacular desert outlier: a living sandstone fort, carved havelis and access to the Thar dunes. Give it enough time for two nights in town plus a carefully chosen desert camp, rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
Sawai Madhopur
Base · 2 days
The functional base for Ranthambore National Park, where the point is multiple safari drives through forest, ruins and lakes—not the town itself. Stay two nights at minimum if tiger sightings genuinely matter to you.
Pushkar
Short stop · 1 day
A compact holy lake town that makes a useful one-night reset between Jaipur and Jodhpur. Go for ghats, temples and the Savitri Mata viewpoint; outside the fair, do not over-allocate time to its café-and-souvenir circuit.
Bundi
Short stop · 1 day
A small, rough-edged Hadoti town of murals, stepwells, a hill fort and blue-and-ochre lanes. It is the right counterweight to Jaipur’s scale if you want one quieter, less manicured stop.
Mewar
Short stop · 1 day
The greener, hillier south around Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur. Use Udaipur as the main base, but treat Kumbhalgarh and especially Ranakpur as full-day or onward-transfer stops rather than casual detours.
Bharatpur
A birding stop built around Keoladeo National Park, best paired with Delhi or Agra rather than substituted for Rajasthan’s fort-and-palace cities. Worth the detour in migratory-bird season; otherwise, be selective.
Shekhawati
Short stop · 1 day
The frescoed haveli belt northeast of Jaipur, best approached through Mandawa or Nawalgarh with a car. It is Rajasthan’s rewarding architectural detour once forts begin to blur together.
Bikaner
Base · 2 days
A working desert trading city with the excellent Junagarh Fort, old havelis and fewer polished-tourism edges than Jodhpur or Jaisalmer. Add it on a longer Jaipur–Jaisalmer overland route, not at the expense of the state’s essentials.
Classic north and Thar first visit
8 daysJaipur (3 days) → Pushkar (1 day) → Jodhpur (2 days) → Jaisalmer (2 days)
The cleanest first route for forts, markets, a holy-town reset and the desert. It works because every transfer follows a logical westward line; do not bolt Udaipur onto it.
Plan this routePalaces, lakes and fort country
9 daysUdaipur (3 days) → Mewar (1 day) → Jodhpur (2 days) → Pushkar (1 day) → Jaipur (2 days)
Best for travellers who want Rajasthan at its most beautiful and architectural without sacrificing days to the long haul to Jaisalmer. Use the Mewar day for either Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur en route to Jodhpur, not both in a rushed dash.
Plan this routeWildlife with the essential cities
10 daysJaipur (3 days) → Sawai Madhopur (2 days) → Udaipur (3 days) → Jodhpur (2 days)
For first-timers who actually want to give Ranthambore two safari chances rather than treating a tiger drive as a box-tick. The long Sawai Madhopur–Udaipur transfer is the price; this route is worth doing only if wildlife matters.
Plan this routeDeeper west Rajasthan circuit
15 daysJaipur (3 days) → Shekhawati (1 day) → Bikaner (2 days) → Jaisalmer (3 days) → Jodhpur (2 days) → Udaipur (3 days) → Bundi (1 day)
A proper longer circuit for travellers who want painted havelis, a working desert city and small-town Rajasthan alongside the headline stops. It is driving-heavy, so use a car for the Shekhawati and Mewar legs rather than pretending rail timetables will make it effortless.
