Delhi
Base · 2–3 days
The practical northern gateway, with Mughal tombs, imperial avenues, Old Delhi lanes and one of India’s deepest food scenes. Give it two nights; trying to “see Delhi” in an afternoon is how visitors start exhausted.
Agra
Short stop · 1 day
Come for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, not for a lingering city break. One night is usually right, ideally timed for a sunrise Taj visit.
Rajasthan
Base · 3–6 days
India’s most coherent grand-tour circuit: Jaipur’s urban bustle, Jodhpur’s fort, Udaipur’s lakefront calm and, only if time permits, the Thar around Jaisalmer. Use a driver and pick three bases rather than racing across the state to collect forts.
Varanasi
Base · 3 days
A raw, lived-in pilgrimage city where dawn on the Ganges and the evening aarti matter more than conventional sightseeing. It is noisy, crowded and confronting; that is precisely why it stays with people.
Mumbai
India’s sharpest big-city stop for food, Art Deco and Gothic architecture, galleries, neighborhoods and nightlife. It works best for travelers who want a functioning metropolis, not a monument checklist or beach escape.
Goa
The necessary decompression stop after northern India, but choose your coast: North Goa for social beaches and restaurants, South Goa for a quieter stay. The useful Goa is seafood, Portuguese-era churches and a well-chosen beach—not merely the party strip.
Kerala
Base · 7 days
A slower southwest circuit of Kochi’s old port, Munnar’s tea hills and the backwaters, with food that deserves as much attention as the scenery. Road distances are real, and a houseboat is worth one night at most before returning to land.
Tamil Nadu
Base · 6 days
The strongest Indian route for Dravidian temple architecture, classical culture and regionally specific eating: Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur, Chettinad and Madurai all earn their place. This is a serious food-and-temple trip, not an idli-and-dosa detour.
Karnataka
Pair Mysuru’s palace-and-market ease with Hampi’s boulder-strewn Vijayanagara ruins; Bengaluru is mainly the flight and dining hub. Hampi needs at least two nights and patience with transport, but it is one of the country’s great archaeological landscapes.
Ladakh
Base · 8 days
Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong deliver high-altitude desert, monasteries and mountain roads that feel entirely separate from the plains. Treat acclimatization and weather buffers as part of the itinerary, not optional inconveniences.
Kolkata and Bengal
Kolkata is India’s essential second-trip city for Bengali food, literary and artistic culture, old-school dining and lived-in colonial streetscapes. Add the Sundarbans only when you have several spare days and modest wildlife expectations.
Meghalaya and the Northeast
A distinct hill-country trip of Shillong, Sohra and living-root bridges, with Khasi culture and green landscapes far removed from the monumental north. It needs time and tolerance for weather and road travel, so it is not a casual add-on.
Classic first India
9 daysDelhi (2 days) → Agra (1 day) → Rajasthan (6 days)
The cleanest first route: Delhi supplies context, Agra delivers the Taj without overstaying, then Rajasthan slows the pace with Jaipur and Udaipur. Use Rajasthan for two bases rather than trying to bolt on Jaisalmer; the Agra-to-Jaipur-to-Udaipur transfers already make this a full itinerary.
Plan this routeNorth India with Varanasi
12 daysDelhi (2 days) → Agra (1 day) → Rajasthan (3 days) → Varanasi (3 days) → Delhi (3 days)
For travelers who want the Taj and Rajasthan but also want India’s religious intensity rather than a purely palace-and-fort trip. Keep Rajasthan to Jaipur on this timeframe; fly Jaipur–Varanasi if schedules allow, then fly back to Delhi. Treat both flight days as compromised travel days, not bonus sightseeing.
Plan this routeSouthern slow travel: Kerala and Tamil Nadu
13 daysKerala (7 days) → Tamil Nadu (6 days)
The strongest route for tropical scenery, food and temple architecture without the northern circuit’s constant sensory pressure. Give Kerala time for Kochi, Munnar and one backwater night, then fly to Tamil Nadu for Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Madurai. Do not force this transfer overland: it burns a day for little reward.
Plan this routeLadakh properly
8 daysLadakh (8 days)
A dedicated high-altitude trip for Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong, not a Rajasthan add-on. Spend the opening two days acclimatizing in Leh, allow road days for the valleys and lake, and retain a weather buffer before the flight out. The limited number of stops is the point.
