Alia
Base · 2 days
The base for this very local trip: come for the Grotte della Gurfa, a rare complex of prehistoric rock-cut chambers, and stay for the high, quiet interior-Sicily setting. It is not a town to pad into a long stay; one or two nights works well.
Madonie Mountains
The natural extension of an Alia stay: limestone ridges, high farming villages and roads that reward having a car. Use it for village-hopping rather than trying to cover the whole park in a day.
Gangi
Base · 2 days
One of the strongest hill-town stops in the Madonie interior, with a compact historic core climbing toward its castle and broad views over the surrounding farmland. It is a better overnight than a quick photo stop if you want the area to feel unhurried.
Petralia Soprana
Short stop · 1 day
A high Madonie village with a more lived-in feel than Sicily's headline towns and excellent mountain panoramas. Pair it with Petralia Sottana or Geraci Siculo, rather than treating it as a standalone detour.
Castelbuono
Short stop · 1 day
The most practical Madonie base town, with a proper center, the Ventimiglia Castle and enough restaurants to make evenings easy. It is the place to stay when you want mountain access without committing to a tiny village.
Geraci Siculo
Short stop · 1 day
A small, dramatic highland village beneath the Madonie peaks, best approached as part of a scenic drive from Petralia or Castelbuono. Go for the altitude, stone lanes and hiking access, not for a packed list of sights.
Caccamo
Short stop · 1 day
An easy western-side addition from Alia, dominated by one of Sicily's most substantial Norman castles. It makes more sense as a day trip or one-night stop than as a base for the Madonie.
Roccapalumba
Short stop · 1 day
A nearby inland stop for the Gurfa-and-geology thread, with the nearby astronomy and science attractions adding a different angle to the usual hill-town circuit. Use it to break up the drive between Alia and Palermo-side towns.
Cefalù
Base · 2 days
The obvious coast finish after the Madonie: Norman cathedral, beach and a far broader choice of places to eat and sleep. It is busy and polished compared with Alia, which is precisely why it works best as a contrast rather than the main base.
Gurfa and Norman castles
4 daysAlia (2 days) → Roccapalumba (1 day) → Caccamo (1 day)
For archaeology and inland Sicily without pretending the area needs a week. Sleep in Alia for the Grotte della Gurfa, use Roccapalumba to add a geology-and-science detour, then finish at Caccamo for its serious Norman castle.

6 daysAlia (2 days) → Gangi (2 days) → Petralia Soprana (1 day) → Geraci Siculo (1 day) → Castelbuono (1 day)
For travelers with a car who want mountain villages, long views and slow drives rather than headline sights. Gangi is the right place to linger; Petralia Soprana and Geraci Siculo are best treated as short, scenic highland stops before dropping to the more practical Castelbuono.

9 daysAlia (2 days) → Gangi (2 days) → Petralia Soprana (1 day) → Geraci Siculo (1 day) → Castelbuono (1 day) → Cefalù (2 days)
The best first-time route for pairing Alia's quiet interior with a proper Sicilian finish. Start with Gurfa and the Madonie villages, make Castelbuono the final mountain base, then give Cefalù enough time to enjoy the cathedral, sea and food without treating it as a drive-through.
