Bologna
Base · 2–3 nights
The region’s best no-car base: porticoes, university energy, serious eating and the easiest rail links to Modena, Ferrara, Parma and Ravenna. It feels lived-in and slightly scruffy rather than museum-perfect.
Parma and the Food Valley
Base · 2–3 nights
Parma is a handsome, manageable city with the Teatro Regio and exceptional cathedral complex; its real advantage is access to Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma and culatello country. Stay here if producer visits are the point, but arrange a car, driver or tour for the countryside.
Modena, Maranello and the Motor Valley
Base · 1–2 nights
Modena earns the stop for its Romanesque cathedral, Ghirlandina and proper local food before Ferrari enters the picture. Use it for traditional balsamic, Lambrusco and the Enzo Ferrari Museum; make Maranello a targeted museum excursion, not an overnight destination.
Ravenna and Classe
Base · 1–2 nights
The mosaics at San Vitale, Galla Placidia and the baptisteries are the region’s clearest art-history essential. Overnight rather than rushing a day trip, then add Sant’Apollinare in Classe or an Adriatic-side detour.
Ferrara
Short stop · 1 day
A spacious, bike-friendly Renaissance city that works as Bologna’s quiet counterweight: Este castle, Jewish heritage and remarkably intact streets and walls. A long day trip is enough for many, but one night suits travelers who want to slow the pace.
Reggio Emilia and the balsamic/cheese country
Short stop · 1 night
A quieter stop between Parma and Modena for Parmigiano, traditional balsamic, Lambrusco and everyday Emilia without Bologna’s crowds. It is most rewarding when paired with a car or bike for the surrounding producers and countryside.
Faenza and the Romagna hills
Faenza is the place to go deep on ceramics at the International Museum of Ceramics, then push into a rougher, more rural Romagna around Brisighella. It is an excellent second-trip addition, but the hill country needs a car to work properly.
The Po Delta and Comacchio
Short stop · 1 night
Wetlands, canals, eel cookery, birdlife and flat horizons make this feel unlike the rest of Emilia-Romagna. Base around Comacchio for cycling or boat trips; do not treat it as a quick Bologna side trip because transport is thin.
Rimini, Riccione and the Romagna Riviera
Base · 3 nights
Choose this stretch for an actual beach stay: Rimini combines a real old town with the coast, while Riccione leans harder into resort life and nightlife. Pick one town and settle in rather than commuting along the crowded summer strip.
The Apennines
The mountain belt is for porcini country around Borgo Val di Taro, forest walks, hill trattorie and cooler summer air. Pick one valley—such as Val Trebbia or the Borgotaro area—rather than wasting days crossing slow mountain roads.
Rail-first sampler
4 nightsBologna (2 days) → Modena, Maranello and the Motor Valley (1 day) → Ravenna and Classe (1 day)
Base all four nights in Bologna. Give the city two proper days, then use direct rail for Modena and Ravenna. This is the short trip to take; adding Parma or Ferrara would turn it into a station-hopping exercise.

8 nightsBologna (3 nights) → Modena, Maranello and the Motor Valley (1 night) → Parma and the Food Valley (2 nights) → Ravenna and Classe (2 nights)
The right first multi-stop route for food, architecture and art. Bologna–Modena–Parma is easy by rail; make the slower Parma-to-Ravenna transfer a travel half-day. Ravenna gets an overnight so its mosaics and Classe do not become a rushed checklist.

10 nightsParma and the Food Valley (3 nights) → Modena, Maranello and the Motor Valley (2 nights) → Bologna (3 nights) → Ferrara (1 day) → Ravenna and Classe (1 night) → The Po Delta and Comacchio (1 night)
For travelers who care as much about dairies, ham cellars and balsamic as headline sights. Use trains on the Parma–Modena–Bologna spine, take Ferrara as a Bologna day trip, then rent a car or book a driver for the Delta rather than pretending its wetlands work on a casual public-transport schedule.

A slow, food-heavy route that finishes with a real coast stay rather than a token Rimini stop. Reggio Emilia is worthwhile here because there is time for its quieter producer country; it would be expendable on a first week. Best in late spring, early summer or September, when the Riviera is pleasant without making inland city days unbearable.
