Grand Baie
Base · 0.5–2 nights
The north’s practical hub for boat trips, diving, restaurants, shops and nightlife. Stay here for logistics, not for its unremarkable main beach or traffic.
Pereybère and La Cuvette
Base · 3–7 nights
The strongest all-round beach base: a compact, sheltered swimming beach, a smaller cove, and easy access to Grand Baie’s restaurants. It is busy because it works, especially on weekends.
Northern Islets: Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Îlot Gabriel
Short stop · 1 day
The district’s essential full-day boat outing, with open-water sailing, snorkeling and bright lagoon shallows around Flat Island and Îlot Gabriel. Pick an operator carefully and keep a weather backup day; this is not a guaranteed calm-sea excursion.
Bain Bœuf and Cap Malheureux
Base · 0.5–5 days
A quieter northern-tip stretch with Coin de Mire views, the red-roofed Cap Malheureux church and better sunset walks than nightlife. It makes sense for a villa stay, but dinner choices are thin without transport.
Grand Gaube
Base · 0.5–2 days
A genuine fishing-village coast with a long lagoon frontage and a slower rhythm than Grand Baie. Come for quiet resort time, diving and lagoon views rather than a walkable restaurant scene.
Calodyne
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
A residential, lagoon-side alternative to the resort bustle, useful for paddleboarding and northern-coast diving. Check your specific hotel’s beach access: the shoreline is not consistently sandy or easy to swim.
Poudre d’Or and Île d’Ambre
Short stop · 1 day
The northeast’s best change of pace: shallow-water kayaking, paddleboarding and mangrove exploration rather than party catamarans. Bring a car or arrange transfers, because access and operators are scattered.
Roches Noires and Bras d’Eau
Base · 1–3 nights
A low-key volcanic coast backed by Bras d’Eau National Park, where easy forest walks and birding replace resort-strip activity. It is a better fit for walkers and divers than for travelers chasing broad sandy beaches.
Goodlands and the Inland North
Short stop · 0.5 days
The practical market-town side of the district: everyday commerce, temples, snack counters and provisions rather than resort polish. Visit for a morning market or local lunch, not as a beach base.
Poste Lafayette
Short stop · 1 day
The district’s windier, more open coastal edge, with reef views and isolated retreat-style hotels. Choose it for scenery and downtime, not for easy swimming or evenings spent walking between cafés.
North essentials long weekend
3 nightsPereybère and La Cuvette (3 nights as the base; beach time on arrival and between outings) → Grand Baie (Half day for restaurants, supplies and an easy first-night dinner) → Bain Bœuf and Cap Malheureux (Half day for the coastal road, church views and sunset) → Northern Islets: Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Îlot Gabriel (1 full weather-dependent boat day) → Grand Gaube (Half day for lagoon roads and a slow seafood lunch) → Calodyne (Half day for diving, snorkeling or a quieter beach reset)
The right short break if you want the north’s useful highlights without pretending you can properly cover the northeast. Pereybère gives you an actual swimming beach and avoids using Grand Baie’s busy bay as your downtime.
Plan this routeClassic first visit, one-base north coast
7 nightsPereybère and La Cuvette (7 nights as the base, with two deliberately unscheduled beach/recovery days) → Grand Baie (1 day split between orientation, dinner and practical errands) → Bain Bœuf and Cap Malheureux (Half day, best paired with a late-afternoon return from Grand Baie) → Northern Islets: Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Îlot Gabriel (1 full day; keep a second day flexible in case of rough weather) → Grand Gaube (Half day for the village coast and lagoon scenery) → Calodyne (Half day for a dive, paddleboard session or resort lunch) → Goodlands and the Inland North (Half day, ideally morning market and snack lunch) → Poudre d’Or and Île d’Ambre (1 full day for kayaking, paddleboarding or a small lagoon boat trip) → Roches Noires and Bras d’Eau (1 full day for a Bras d’Eau walk and the volcanic northeast coast)
This is the sensible first-timer itinerary: one beach-friendly base, one major boat day, then day trips by car or taxi. Hotel hopping would add hassle for drives that look short on a map but are slow enough to be irritating.
Plan this routeQuiet north-and-northeast split
10 nightsBain Bœuf and Cap Malheureux (5 nights as the first base, with time for quiet coast walks and northern-islets departure logistics) → Northern Islets: Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Îlot Gabriel (1 full day from the Bain Bœuf base, with weather flexibility) → Grand Gaube (2 nights for village-lagoon pace, diving and resort downtime) → Calodyne (Half day or a full activity day from Grand Gaube for diving or paddleboarding) → Poudre d’Or and Île d’Ambre (1 full day from the northeast base for mangroves and shallow-water paddling) → Roches Noires and Bras d’Eau (3 nights as the final base, including a forest-walk day) → Poste Lafayette (1 day trip or coastal afternoon from Roches Noires for open-reef scenery)
For travelers who actively do not want Grand Baie’s restaurant-and-traffic circus. It trades walkable evenings for quieter water time, forest access and a coast that feels less engineered for package holidays. Rent a car; by bus, this split is more trouble than it is worth.
Plan this routeDeep-cut district slow travel
14 nightsGrand Baie (2 nights for boat operators, diving, dining and nightlife) → Pereybère and La Cuvette (4 nights for proper beach time while remaining close to Grand Baie) → Northern Islets: Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Îlot Gabriel (1 full day during the Grand Baie/Pereybère stay) → Bain Bœuf and Cap Malheureux (3 nights for a quieter north-tip villa or small hotel stay) → Calodyne (1 day trip or activity day for diving and lagoon time) → Grand Gaube (2 nights for a slow village-and-lagoon reset) → Goodlands and the Inland North (Half day for market food and provisions en route east) → Poudre d’Or and Île d’Ambre (1 full day for mangroves and paddling) → Roches Noires and Bras d’Eau (3 nights for forest walks, diving and the volcanic coast) → Poste Lafayette (1 day trip or final coastal afternoon from Roches Noires)
A deliberately unhurried route for beach people who also want the district’s ordinary village life and wilder northeast. It works only if you like settling into places; Rivière du Rempart does not reward trying to manufacture a new headline attraction every day.
