Kraków
Base · 3–4 days
The essential base: royal Wawel, the Old Town, Kazimierz and Podgórze pack several distinct versions of Polish history into a compact, walkable city. Use it for four or five nights rather than treating it as a quick stop between mountain towns.
Zakopane and the Polish Tatras
Base · 3–4 days
Zakopane is the practical gateway to Tatra National Park, from easy valleys and Morskie Oko to serious alpine hikes and winter sports. Ignore the commercial crush of Krupówki when possible and stay closer to Kuźnice or Kościelisko for the landscape.
Pieniny: Szczawnica, Krościenko, Czorsztyn and the Dunajec Gorge
Base · 2–3 days
This is the better mountain choice for travelers who want limestone cliffs, a river gorge and walking without Zakopane’s circus. Base in Szczawnica or Krościenko for Dunajec rafting, the Pieniny Road, and Sokolica or Trzy Korony viewpoints.
Oświęcim and Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial
Short stop · 1 day
One of Europe’s defining memorial sites, requiring most of a day and a serious frame of mind. Give it its own day from Kraków; pairing it with another major attraction is a bad idea.
Wieliczka and Bochnia Salt Mines
Short stop · 1 day
Wieliczka’s carved chambers, chapels and underground spaces are genuinely singular, while older Bochnia is a less crowded alternative. Wieliczka is the easy Kraków day trip, but reserve timed entry and expect a tightly managed visit.
Ojców National Park and the Kraków Valleys
Short stop · 1 day
Limestone cliffs, caves, ravines and Pieskowa Skała castle make this the most satisfying natural break from Kraków. It is a real half- or full-day outing, not wilderness, and weekends can feel busy.
Tarnów
Base · 2 days
A handsome, slower city with a Renaissance square, Galician character and substantial Jewish history, without Kraków’s international-tourist churn. One night is usually enough unless you are using it to explore nearby vineyards and wooden churches.
Nowy Sącz, Stary Sącz and the Beskid Sądecki
Base · 2 days
Choose this dispersed foothill region for wooded walks, historic small towns, mineral-water spas and a less packaged version of the Carpathians. It works best with a car or patience for buses; Krynica-Zdrój and Muszyna are useful extensions.
Wadowice, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Zator's Carp Valley
Western Małopolska’s quieter circuit combines John Paul II heritage, the major pilgrimage complex at Kalwaria, and fishpond country around Zator. Go with a specific interest—Catholic heritage or regional food—rather than trying to force every stop into a generic sightseeing day.
Kraków first visit, no car
5 daysKraków (3 days) → Wieliczka and Bochnia Salt Mines (1 day) → Ojców National Park and the Kraków Valleys (1 day)
For a first look at Małopolska, stay put in Kraków rather than wasting time changing hotels. Use the two day trips for either Wieliczka’s salt chambers and Ojców’s limestone valleys; if Auschwitz-Birkenau matters more, substitute it for Ojców and give it the full final day.
Plan this routeKraków and the Tatras
8 daysKraków (4 days) → Zakopane and the Polish Tatras (4 days)
The right split for city culture plus actual mountain time. Kraków covers the major urban sights and one near-ring excursion; Zakopane gets a light arrival day, a valley or Morskie Oko day, and at least one proper high-view or hiking day. Do not attempt the Tatras as a Kraków day trip.

10 daysKraków (4 days) → Zakopane and the Polish Tatras (3 days) → Pieniny: Szczawnica, Krościenko, Czorsztyn and the Dunajec Gorge (3 days)
For travelers who want two genuinely different mountain landscapes: the Tatras for big alpine scenery, then Pieniny for the Dunajec raft trip, riverside cycling and limestone viewpoints. Keep the Zakopane-to-Szczawnica transfer deliberately light; a car makes this route substantially easier.

14 daysKraków (4 days) → Oświęcim and Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial (1 day) → Tarnów (2 days) → Nowy Sącz, Stary Sącz and the Beskid Sądecki (2 days) → Pieniny: Szczawnica, Krościenko, Czorsztyn and the Dunajec Gorge (2 days) → Zakopane and the Polish Tatras (3 days)
A car-first route for repeat visitors who want the region beyond its headline stops: Tarnów’s Galician cityscape, the spa-and-foothill country around Nowy Sącz, then Pieniny and the Tatras. Auschwitz-Birkenau is deliberately isolated as a full day. Without a car, drop Tarnów or the Beskid Sądecki rather than turning the trip into a bus-schedule exercise.
