Warsaw
Base · 3–5 days
The essential stop: reconstructed Old Town and royal sites sit alongside POLIN, the Warsaw Uprising Museum, Łazienki, Praga and a serious restaurant and bar scene. Give it at least three full days; its best sights are spread across the city, not concentrated in one old quarter.
Kampinos National Park, Żelazowa Wola and Sochaczew
Short stop · 1 day
Mazovia’s best west-of-Warsaw escape combines flat pine forest, dunes and marsh trails with Chopin’s birthplace at Żelazowa Wola. With a car, pair the estate and a walk; without one, choose either Kampinos or Chopin rather than rushing both.
Płock
Base · 2 days
A former Polish capital with Cathedral Hill, royal tombs, a high Vistula escarpment and an unusually good Art Nouveau and Art Deco collection at the Mazovian Museum. Stay a night rather than reducing it to a rushed transit stop.
Modlin Fortress and the Vistula–Narew confluence
Short stop · 0.5 days
A sprawling, fragmentary 19th-century fortress at the meeting of two major rivers. It works best as an atmospheric military-history stop on a drive between Warsaw, Płock and Pułtusk, not as a polished standalone museum visit.
Pułtusk and the Narew
Short stop · 1 day
A compact canal-side town with an exceptionally long cobbled market square, a painted Renaissance basilica and a former bishops’ castle. Come for one relaxed overnight, seasonal boating or kayaking, and an unhurried old-Polish dinner.
Kurpie: Ostrołęka, Kadzidło and the northern forests
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
The region’s clearest folk-cultural detour: paper-cutting, beekeeping, forest food, workshops and fafernuchy carrot cookies rather than generic village nostalgia. It rewards a car and genuine interest in crafts or rural life.
Czersk, Góra Kalwaria and Warka
Short stop · 1 day
This southern Vistula escarpment and orchard belt is an easy, worthwhile road trip from Warsaw, anchored by Czersk’s Gothic castle ruins. Add Góra Kalwaria’s layered religious history, Warka, and apple juice or cider from the Grójec orchard country.
Radom and Orońsko
Base · 2 days
Radom is a working city rather than a postcard set, but its Malczewski Museum and village museum give it substance; nearby Orońsko adds Poland’s major centre for contemporary sculpture. Go with an art, craft or social-history interest rather than simply to collect another city.
Siedlce, Liw, Węgrów and the Liwiec–Bug borderland
Base · 2 days
East Mazovia’s low-key river country combines Liw’s small ducal castle, Węgrów’s churches, Siedlce’s Ogiński palace and its El Greco, plus kayaking on the Liwiec and Bug. The appeal is meadow-and-river texture and a soft-adventure pace, not blockbuster sightseeing.
Warsaw with a proper west-of-city escape
4 daysWarsaw (3 days) → Kampinos National Park, Żelazowa Wola and Sochaczew (1 day)
The right short first visit: give Warsaw its due, then use the final day for either Kampinos walking or Chopin’s birthplace and Sochaczew. Do not sacrifice city time to force in Płock.
Plan this routeClassic first Mazovia by public transport
7 daysWarsaw (4 days) → Pułtusk and the Narew (1 day) → Płock (2 days)
Built for travelers without a car. Warsaw is the main event; Pułtusk makes an easy bus day trip, while Płock earns an overnight for Cathedral Hill, the Vistula escarpment and the Mazovian Museum. Check Płock rail or coach times before locking it in.

9 daysWarsaw (4 days) → Kampinos National Park, Żelazowa Wola and Sochaczew (1 day) → Płock (2 days) → Modlin Fortress and the Vistula–Narew confluence (Half day) → Pułtusk and the Narew (1 day) → Kurpie: Ostrołęka, Kadzidło and the northern forests (Overnight and half day)
A coherent car loop rather than a scattershot list. Płock gets enough time to feel worthwhile; Modlin is a strong en-route stop; Pułtusk provides the gentler riverside overnight before Kurpie’s forest-and-folk-culture finish. Skip Kurpie and add time to Płock or Warsaw if crafts and rural life are not genuinely your thing.
Plan this routeDeep Mazovia: capital, rivers, borderland and southern art
14 daysWarsaw (5 days) → Płock (2 days) → Pułtusk and the Narew (1 day) → Kurpie: Ostrołęka, Kadzidło and the northern forests (1 day) → Siedlce, Liw, Węgrów and the Liwiec–Bug borderland (2 days) → Radom and Orońsko (2 days) → Czersk, Góra Kalwaria and Warka (1 day)
For a traveler with a car who wants the region beyond Warsaw’s orbit. It moves logically from the Vistula northward through Narew and Kurpie, then south through the Liwiec–Bug country to Radom and the orchard belt. This is deliberately slow enough for river time, museums and minor-town evenings rather than endless driving.
