Durban & Umhlanga
Base · 2 days
Start here for Durban curry, bunny chow, markets and the Indian Ocean promenade. Stay in Umhlanga for an easier beachfront base; use central Durban for food and texture rather than polish.
St Lucia & southern iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Base · 3 days
KZN’s best compact bush-and-water stop: estuary hippos and crocodiles, Cape Vidal beaches, dune forest and birding from one practical base. St Lucia itself is small and touristy, so treat it as a nature base rather than a town break.
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park
Base · 2 days
The province’s strongest classic safari stop, with Big Five game viewing, rhino history and worthwhile self-drive roads. Give it two nights near or inside the reserve so dawn and dusk drives are possible.
Central Drakensberg
Base · 3 days
Base in Champagne Valley, Monk’s Cowl or Giant’s Castle for big escarpment walks, mountain lodges and San rock art. Choose the valley around the hike or art site you actually want; the area is too spread out to treat as one interchangeable park.
KwaZulu-Natal Midlands
Base · 1–2 days
The country-lodge belt around Howick, Karkloof, Dargle, Balgowan and Nottingham Road is a good slow stop between Durban and the mountains. Do Howick Falls, a forest walk and a serious farm lunch rather than spending the day browsing generic craft shops.
Northern Drakensberg & Royal Natal National Park
Come for the Amphitheatre and Tugela Gorge: this is KZN’s most dramatic mountain scenery and a stronger choice than the central range for committed walkers. It needs its own base and should not be squeezed into a casual detour from Durban or St Lucia.
Battlefields
Base · 2 days
Base around Dundee or Nqutu for Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, where the landscape only makes sense with a strong guide. Prioritize guides who explain Zulu, British and Boer perspectives rather than replaying an empire-era film script.
North Coast
Ballito, Salt Rock and Umdloti provide easy warm-water beach time close to King Shaka airport. Pick it for family villas, surfing and convenience, not for the food depth of Durban or the wildlife of the Elephant Coast.
Sodwana Bay & Kosi Bay
Base · 2–3 days
The remote northeast coast is for reef diving at Sodwana or estuaries, fish traps and low-key wilderness around Kosi Bay. Access can be sandy and facilities rustic, so this is a time-rich add-on rather than a first-trip essential.
South Coast & Oribi Gorge
Scottburgh, Pennington, Margate and Port Edward offer a quieter, more domestic-holiday coast, while Aliwal Shoal draws divers and Oribi Gorge adds hiking and adrenaline activities. It is best saved for divers, surfers or a relaxed beach-house stay.
First KZN trip: Durban, wetlands and safari
7-8 daysDurban & Umhlanga (2 days) → St Lucia & southern iSimangaliso Wetland Park (3 days) → Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (2 days)
The clean first-timer route: Durban for food and Indian Ocean city life, St Lucia for estuary wildlife and Cape Vidal, then Hluhluwe-iMfolozi for proper dawn-and-dusk safari time. Do not dilute it with Sodwana, Kosi Bay or the Battlefields.

7 daysDurban & Umhlanga (2 days) → KwaZulu-Natal Midlands (2 days) → Central Drakensberg (3 days)
For travelers who care more about food, country stays and hiking than ticking off safari. The Midlands breaks up the drive well; in the Drakensberg, choose one valley and hike it properly rather than driving between scattered trailheads.

12 daysDurban & Umhlanga (2 days) → St Lucia & southern iSimangaliso Wetland Park (3 days) → Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (2 days) → Battlefields (2 days) → Central Drakensberg (3 days)
A serious rental-car loop for travelers who want KZN’s defining contrasts: Durban food, wetland wildlife, Big Five safari, Zulu and colonial history, then mountain hiking. It moves quickly, so skip the Battlefields if you would rather have more unstructured safari or mountain time.

For repeat South Africa visitors, divers and committed road-trippers willing to accept rougher northern-coast access and frequent base changes. Sodwana or Kosi Bay earns its place only if diving, camping or remote coastal wilderness is genuinely the point.
