Cape Town
Base · 3–5 days
The essential first base for Table Mountain, Robben Island, the City Bowl’s museums and restaurants, Atlantic beaches, and Cape Malay food. Stay in City Bowl/Gardens for the most useful mix of walkability and dining; use it to explore rather than treating the V&A Waterfront as the city.
Cape Peninsula
A full-day loop south of Cape Town linking Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Simon’s Town, Boulders’ penguins and Cape Point. It is the most rewarding scenic day trip in the province, but rushed half-day versions miss the point.
Cape Winelands
Base · 1–2 days
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl deliver the province’s strongest concentration of estates, serious lunches and Cape Dutch scenery. Base in Stellenbosch for range and convenience, or Franschhoek for a more polished, pricier food-and-hotel stay.
Whale Coast
Base · 1–2 days
Hermanus is the practical base for cliff-path whale watching, while Stanford and De Kelders add quieter rural and rugged-coast options. Give it two nights if whales, coves and a slower coastal rhythm matter; one night works as an extension from Cape Town.
West Coast
Base · 2 days
Langebaan brings lagoon activities and West Coast National Park; Paternoster is the better overnight for seafood and atmosphere. Come for the stark Atlantic landscape and, in flower season, blooms—not for urban polish or nonstop activity.
Breede River Valley
Robertson and McGregor are the quieter, better-value wine-country detour: family-run wineries, sparkling wine, olive country and rural stays. This is for travelers who want vineyards without Franschhoek’s curated bustle.
Little Karoo
Base · 2 days
Oudtshoorn, Prince Albert and the Swartberg provide the province’s sharpest landscape contrast: dry interior light, mountain passes, Cango Caves and Karoo lamb. Make the drives and mountains the reason to come rather than reducing it to an ostrich-farm stop.
Mossel Bay and Wilderness
Base · 1–2 days
The western Garden Route makes a sensible break between the interior or Cape Town and Knysna. Choose Wilderness for lagoon, beach and forest scenery; choose Mossel Bay for a sunnier, more functional base and easier family logistics.
Knysna
Short stop · 1 day
The Garden Route’s most practical central base, with lagoon views, forest walks, the Heads and plenty of services. It is more useful than glamorous: stay here for access and activity, then seek cleaner beach time in Plettenberg Bay.
Plettenberg Bay
Short stop · 1 day
The Garden Route’s best beach-focused stop, with broad sand, headlands and easy access to Nature’s Valley hikes. It earns at least two nights for travelers who want coast time rather than merely ticking off the Garden Route.
Cederberg
A remote northern-mountain escape around Clanwilliam, rooibos country, sandstone formations, rock art and dark skies. It needs at least two nights and is best saved for hikers or repeat visitors willing to plan around gravel roads and sparse services.
Essential first visit
7 daysCape Town (4 days) → Cape Winelands (2 days) → Whale Coast (1 day)
The right first Western Cape trip: enough Cape Town time for Table Mountain, Robben Island and a full Cape Peninsula day, then wine country and a final coastal night in Hermanus. Do not dilute it with the Garden Route.

10 daysCape Town (4 days) → Cape Winelands (2 days) → Whale Coast (1 day) → Mossel Bay and Wilderness (2 days) → Plettenberg Bay (1 day)
A workable open-jaw road trip for a first-time self-driver. The Whale Coast-to-Garden-Route leg is deliberately given breathing room, and finishing near George is smarter than wasting a day backtracking to Cape Town.

For travelers who want the Western Cape's contrasts rather than a rushed highlights reel: city, vineyards, whale coast, dry mountain country and the Garden Route. The Little Karoo earns its own stop; it is not just a road between coasts.

6 daysCape Town (3 days) → West Coast (2 days) → Cape Winelands (1 day)
A strong second-trip alternative for seafood, birds and wildflower season. Base on the West Coast around Paternoster for atmosphere, then use the Winelands as a final wine-and-lunch stop rather than trying to force in the Garden Route.
