Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula
Base · 4 nights
The essential first stop: Table Mountain, Robben Island, Bo-Kaap, serious restaurants and a full-day drive via Cape Point and Boulders’ penguins. It needs four or five nights because the city, beaches, hikes and peninsula are spread out.
Greater Kruger
Base · 3 nights
South Africa’s flagship Big Five country, spanning self-drive Kruger National Park and private reserves such as Sabi Sands, Timbavati and Klaserie. Use public camps for value and freedom; pay for a private reserve if guided drives and off-road tracking matter more than budget.
Cape Winelands
Base · 2 nights
Stellenbosch is the practical all-round base, Franschhoek is prettier and more expensive, and Constantia works as a Cape Town day trip. Come for focused tasting days, Cape Dutch estates and restaurant lunches—not a rushed wine-tram checklist.
Garden Route
Base · 4 nights
The lush coastal drive from Mossel Bay through Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay to Tsitsikamma delivers lagoons, beaches, forests and easy hikes. Give it two bases over three to five nights; nightly hotel changes ruin the point.
Johannesburg, Soweto and Pretoria
Base · 1–2 nights
This is the country’s most consequential urban stop for apartheid history, Constitution Hill, Soweto, galleries and contemporary food. It is worth one or two deliberate nights around a safari, but needs more logistical judgment than Cape Town.
Durban, Umhlanga and the KwaZulu-Natal coast
Base · 2 nights
Come for warm Indian Ocean swimming, surf and South Africa’s best Indian food—especially Durban curries and bunny chow. Stay in Durban for food and city texture, or base in easier Umhlanga for the beach.
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, St Lucia and iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Base · 5 nights
A subtropical mix of rhino country, hippos and crocodiles in St Lucia, wetlands and Indian Ocean beaches. It is a more varied, less polished safari-and-coast trip than Greater Kruger and works best with a rental car.
Drakensberg
Base · 3 nights
The uKhahlamba-Drakensberg escarpment is the country’s strongest mountain escape: long walks, basalt cliffs, San rock art and lodge stays near the Lesotho border. Give it at least two nights; weather and trail conditions do not reward a rushed overnight.
Eastern Cape: Addo, Gqeberha and the Wild Coast
Base · 2 nights
Addo Elephant National Park is the sensible malaria-free safari add-on to a Garden Route drive, while the Wild Coast is rugged, Xhosa-rooted and far less developed. Gqeberha is mainly the useful flight gateway; the Wild Coast needs time and patient driving.
Karoo and Klein Karoo
The semi-desert interior offers big skies, stargazing, Karoo lamb, ostrich country around Oudtshoorn and properly quiet road-trip stops such as Prince Albert. Take it as a one- or two-night detour between Cape Town and the Garden Route, not a compulsory stop.
Classic first visit: Cape Town, Winelands and safari
9 nightsCape Town and the Cape Peninsula (4 nights) → Cape Winelands (2 nights) → Greater Kruger (3 nights)
The cleanest first trip: city, food, mountain scenery, wine and a proper Big Five finish. Fly from Cape Town to a Kruger gateway; driving the 1,400km is a waste of holiday time.

12 nightsCape Town and the Cape Peninsula (4 nights) → Cape Winelands (2 nights) → Garden Route (4 nights) → Eastern Cape: Addo, Gqeberha and the Wild Coast (2 nights)
For travelers who would rather drive, walk and eat well than spend heavily on safari lodges. Use two Garden Route bases, finish at Addo, and fly out of Gqeberha rather than backtracking all the way to Cape Town.

14 nightsCape Town and the Cape Peninsula (4 nights) → Cape Winelands (2 nights) → Garden Route (4 nights) → Johannesburg, Soweto and Pretoria (1 night) → Greater Kruger (3 nights)
A full but defensible country-scale itinerary. Drive the Cape section one way, fly from Gqeberha to Johannesburg or a Kruger gateway, then finish with safari. Keep Johannesburg to a purposeful overnight unless history and urban culture are a priority.

The stronger choice for repeat visitors, hikers and serious food travelers. It is car-dependent and less polished than the Cape–Kruger classic, but the shift from Highveld city to mountain escarpment, Durban curries and rhino-and-wetland country feels like a real journey.
