Serengeti
Base · 3–4 nights
Tanzania’s essential plains safari: big cats, kopjes and the migration, but the right sector matters more than the park name. Central Seronera is the dependable all-round base; Ndutu, western and northern areas are seasonal choices.
Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands
Short stop · 1 night
The crater delivers unusually dense wildlife and strong rhino odds in a single early descent. It is spectacular rather than secluded: expect other vehicles, fixed gate hours and pricey rim lodging.
Tarangire and Karatu
Base · 2 nights
Tarangire’s elephants, baobabs and river habitat make a useful counterpoint to the Serengeti; Karatu is the sensible base for the crater. Give it one or two nights rather than treating it as a rushed Arusha day trip.
Zanzibar (Unguja Island)
Base · 3–6 nights
Pair Stone Town’s food and dense Swahili history with a beach chosen deliberately: Nungwi/Kendwa for swimming and bustle, Paje/Jambiani for tides and kiting, Michamvi for quiet. Do not assume every beach is swimmable all day.
Arusha
Short stop · 1 night
The practical northern-safari gateway between JRO and the parks, with a worthwhile buffer night before a long drive. It is functional rather than a destination unless you want Mount Meru, markets or coffee-country excursions.
Moshi and Mount Kilimanjaro
Base · 8–10 days
Moshi is the more relaxed base for Kilimanjaro climbs, Chagga coffee and foothill walks. The mountain needs a properly paced 6–8-day ascent; shaving acclimatization days is a bad bargain.
Nyerere National Park
Base · 3 nights
Rufiji River and lake country where boating safaris add something genuinely different from a standard vehicle-only safari. It works best as a fly-in southern circuit from Dar, not as a long road detour.
Ruaha
Base · 4–5 nights
A rugged, dry-country safari of baobabs, big game and far fewer vehicles than the northern circuit. Stay several nights and fly in; trying to connect it overland with Nyerere burns safari time.
Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo
Short stop · 1 night
Dar is the useful urban gateway for southern safaris, ferries and Mafia, with serious food and nightlife; Bagamoyo offers a quieter historical coastal pause. Neither is a substitute for a Zanzibar beach stay, and Dar traffic can consume a day.
Pemba and Mafia
These are the quieter island choices for diving, reefs and a slower rhythm than Unguja. They have less accommodation and restaurant choice, more fragile connections and little tolerance for tight same-day transfers.
Mahale Mountains and Gombe
Lake Tanganyika rainforest for habituated chimp tracking, swimming and kayaking—one of Tanzania’s great wildlife experiences. It is remote, costly and weather-sensitive, so book chimp access and flights before building the rest of the trip.
Mwanza, Lake Victoria and Rubondo
A Lake Victoria extension with granite kopjes, fishing culture and quieter birding or safari possibilities around Rubondo. It is rewarding on a longer or repeat visit, but not a better first use of limited safari days than the Serengeti.
Northern safari and Zanzibar first visit
10-12 daysArusha (1 night) → Tarangire and Karatu (2 nights) → Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands (1 night) → Serengeti (3-4 nights) → Zanzibar (Unguja Island) (3-4 nights)
The strongest first Tanzania itinerary: elephants and baobabs, the crater, then enough time in the Serengeti to justify the long park-road transfer. Fly from a Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar rather than sacrificing a day driving back to Arusha. Put one night in Stone Town, then choose a beach coast that suits you.
Plan this routeClassic northern circuit, safari only
7-8 daysArusha (1 night) → Tarangire and Karatu (2 nights) → Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands (1 night) → Serengeti (3-4 nights)
For travelers who want wildlife rather than a beach add-on. This is the right short northern circuit: Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti each do something distinct. Skip an extra Lake Manyara overnight and fly out of the Serengeti; a road return to Arusha is wasted safari time.
Plan this routeSouthern wilderness and Zanzibar
13-15 daysDar es Salaam and Bagamoyo (1 night) → Nyerere National Park (3 nights) → Ruaha (4-5 nights) → Zanzibar (Unguja Island) (5-6 nights)
The better Tanzania route for people who value quiet camps over famous names. Nyerere adds river and boat safaris; Ruaha is the dry, baobab-heavy big-game counterpoint. Use light aircraft between Dar, Nyerere, Ruaha and Zanzibar—overland links between the southern parks chew through days for little reward.
Plan this routeKilimanjaro with a compact northern safari
16-19 daysMoshi and Mount Kilimanjaro (8-10 days) → Arusha (1 night) → Tarangire and Karatu (2 nights) → Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands (1 night) → Serengeti (3-4 nights)
Make the mountain the main event, not a rushed prelude to an overstuffed country itinerary. Allow a properly acclimatized climb plus recovery, then take a compact but convincing safari. Fly out from the Serengeti. Zanzibar only makes sense if you can add at least four more nights after this.
