Stone Town
Base · 2–3.5 days
The essential base: dense coral-rag lanes, carved doors, mosques, old sultans’ buildings and enough food and evening life to make walking the point. Stay here for the city, not for a beach holiday; the House of Wonders is still closed inside.
Forodhani and the Stone Town Seafront
Short stop · 1 day
Come at sunset for dhow traffic, the Old Fort frontage and the evening food stalls. It is the best first-night orientation, though the market is uneven—buy from busy stalls and treat it as snacks rather than your definitive Zanzibar meal.
Darajani and Ng’ambo
The market and the larger lived-in city beyond the old town give more useful insight into Zanzibar than another polished heritage alley. Go for produce, fish, street food and city rhythm; it is hot, busy and not a place to flash valuables.
Changuu (Prison Island)
Short stop · 0.5 days
A straightforward half-day boat trip from Stone Town, combining detention-and-quarantine history, giant tortoises and a swim. Go early or late to avoid the busiest boats; serious snorkellers should spend their limited reef time elsewhere.
Fumba Peninsula
Base · 2–3 nights
The practical southwest base for Menai Bay dhow trips, with more space and less urban friction than Stone Town. Stay here only if marine days matter more than being able to walk to markets, museums and late-night food.
Kwale Island and Menai Bay
Short stop · 1 day
This is the classic full-day Fumba outing: dhow sailing, sandbanks, swimming, mangroves and a seafood lunch. It is a well-run group excursion rather than wilderness, so book a legitimate operator and do not expect solitude.
Chumbe Island Coral Park
Base · 1–3 nights
The region’s strongest reef-and-conservation choice, with managed snorkelling, a forest trail and very limited eco-lodge capacity. It costs more and needs advance planning, but it is a far better use of time than a generic party boat if reef quality is the priority.
Mangapwani
Base · 3 nights
A quiet northwest coast stop for the coral cave, the sobering Slave Chamber and a low-key beach finish. Choose it for seclusion and a slower pace, not nightlife, easy restaurant-hopping or Zanzibar’s best swimming beach.
Mtoni, Maruhubi and Bububu
Short stop · 0.5 days
This north-city corridor adds the fragmentary Mtoni and Maruhubi palace ruins to a practical, less central west-coast stay. It works as a half-day with a driver or a logistics-friendly hotel base; it is underwhelming if you expect restored monuments or a destination beach.
Compact Stone Town stopover
3 nights / 4 daysStone Town (2.5 days) → Changuu (Prison Island) (Half day) → Forodhani and the Stone Town Seafront (1 evening)
For a short cultural break, not a pretend beach holiday. Sleep in Stone Town, give its lanes and markets proper time, take the easy Prison Island boat trip, then finish with sunset and snacks at Forodhani. Do not waste this itinerary on a cross-region transfer to Fumba or Mangapwani.

6 nights / 7 daysStone Town (3.5 days) → Changuu (Prison Island) (Half day) → Mtoni, Maruhubi and Bububu (Half day) → Fumba Peninsula (2 nights / roughly 2 days) → Kwale Island and Menai Bay (1 full day, during the Fumba stay)
The sensible first-timer split: use Stone Town for history, food and everyday city life, then move once to Fumba for the marine day. Mtoni, Maruhubi and Bububu fit as a driver-led half-day before the transfer; they do not justify a separate overnight. Keep one Fumba day unplanned in case weather disrupts the Menai Bay boat trip.
Plan this routeCulture, reef and quiet northwest coast
8 nights / 9 daysStone Town (3 nights / roughly 3 days) → Changuu (Prison Island) (Half day, from Stone Town) → Fumba Peninsula (2 nights / roughly 2 days) → Kwale Island and Menai Bay (1 full day, during the Fumba stay) → Mtoni, Maruhubi and Bububu (Half day, en route north) → Mangapwani (3 nights / roughly 3 days)
For travelers who want contrasts rather than maximum convenience: dense Stone Town, a proper southwest boat day, then a deliberately quiet finish at Mangapwani. The palace belt makes sense on the northbound transfer. Mangapwani is for caves, the Slave Chamber and doing very little; anyone needing nightlife should stay in Stone Town instead.
Plan this routeReef-first, low-excursion stay
7-9 nightsStone Town (2-3 nights / roughly 2 days) → Chumbe Island Coral Park (2-3 nights, or 1 full day if an overnight is unavailable) → Fumba Peninsula (3 nights / roughly 3 days) → Kwale Island and Menai Bay (1 full day, during the Fumba stay)
For snorkellers and conservation-minded travelers who would rather spend money on Chumbe than repeat generic island cruises. Book Chumbe first and build the rest around its boat schedule. Stone Town gets enough time for its essentials; Fumba is the practical recovery base and gives you one Menai Bay day if sea conditions cooperate.
