Inverness Airport: Take Stagecoach 11/11A “Jet Bus” to the city centre/rail station area: about 25 minutes, every 30 minutes, roughly £5–10. A taxi is about £25 and only makes sense for a group, late arrival or awkward luggage. Do not plan on the airport rail stop: it is about a mile from the terminal via an unappealing walk.
Inverness railway station (Academy Street): This is the useful arrival point: it is in the centre, a few minutes’ walk from the Victorian Market, River Ness and most hotels. Direct trains link Edinburgh and Glasgow in about 4 hours, Aberdeen in about 2 hr 15 min, Kyle of Lochalsh in about 2 hr 40 min, and Wick/Thurso in about 4 hours. The Caledonian Sleeper from London Euston is worthwhile for time-saving, but reserve berths well ahead.
Inverness bus station (Farraline Park): Two blocks northwest of the rail station and practical for Citylink, Megabus, Ember and Highland services. Edinburgh/Glasgow services run via Perth and Aviemore; buses are often cheaper than rail but take longer. It is also the departure point for the useful 919 to Drumnadrochit, Urquhart Castle and Fort William.
