Anchorage, Turnagain Arm and Girdwood
Base · 2 nights
Use Anchorage for flights, rental cars, museums and a proper meal before heading out. The Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm and mountain-base Girdwood make it the only gateway stop worth giving real time to.
Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park
Base · 2–3 nights
The most efficient Alaska stop for an accessible glacier hike and a full marine-wildlife day: Exit Glacier on land, then fjords, seabirds, otters and whales by boat. Stay two nights; a day trip from Anchorage wastes the point.
Denali National Park area
Base · 2–3 nights
Come for tundra scale, wildlife and the chance—not the guarantee—of seeing Denali. The park bus is the main event; give it at least two nights so bad weather does not reduce the visit to entrance-area souvenir shops.
Fairbanks and Chena Hot Springs
Base · 2 nights
Fairbanks is the sensible finish to a Denali route and Alaska's most straightforward aurora base. Pair the Museum of the North and Interior atmosphere with a deliberate day trip to Chena, not a rushed add-on.
Talkeetna
Short stop · 1 night
This tiny rail-and-road town earns an overnight as the best base for Denali flightseeing and glacier landings. It also breaks up the drive north, but one night is usually sufficient unless weather demands a flight buffer.
Homer and Kachemak Bay
Base · 2–3 nights
Homer is the slower, more individual coastal alternative to Seward: fishing boats, halibut, kayaking and water-taxi access to Kachemak Bay. Commit at least two or three nights; it is too far from Anchorage for a token visit.
Juneau
Base · 3 nights
Southeast's strongest all-round base combines Mendenhall Glacier, whale watching, hiking, seafood and enough infrastructure to make several days easy. Get beyond the cruise-ship downtown rather than treating it as a port call.
Sitka
Base · 3 nights
Sitka has more character than most Southeast stops: Tlingit and Russian-American history, rainforest, fishing culture and strong wildlife outings. It rewards independent travelers willing to fly or take a long ferry leg.
Ketchikan and Misty Fjords
Base · 3 nights
Come for totem heritage, salmon-town texture, rainforest and floatplane or boat access to Misty Fjords. Cruise crowds are intense, so spend time beyond Creek Street and the ship-facing center.
Valdez and Prince William Sound
Valdez delivers steep mountains, waterfalls, marine ice and serious glacier-cruise country. Choose it for a wetter, more dramatic coastal road trip, not as an easy add-on to Seward and Homer.
McCarthy and Kennicott, Wrangell–St. Elias
This is the independent-traveler Alaska play: huge mountain country, serious hiking and the striking old Kennecott mining landscape. The rough McCarthy Road and limited services mean it deserves three nights minimum.
Kodiak and the Katmai/King Salmon bear-viewing circuit
Choose this flight-dependent circuit when bears are the priority rather than a bonus on a road trip. Kodiak adds wild island and fishing-town texture; King Salmon and Katmai are for committed, expensive bear-viewing days.

10 daysAnchorage, Turnagain Arm and Girdwood (2 nights) → Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park (2 nights) → Talkeetna (1 night) → Denali National Park area (2 nights) → Fairbanks and Chena Hot Springs (2 nights)
The right first-timer route if you want the headline experiences without wasting days backtracking: Kenai Fjords by boat, a Talkeetna flightseeing weather window, Denali by park bus, then an open-jaw finish in Fairbanks. Anchorage/Girdwood is a useful scenic reset between Seward and the drive north, not a destination to overstay.
Plan this routeSouthcentral coast, slow enough to enjoy
8 daysAnchorage, Turnagain Arm and Girdwood (2 nights) → Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park (2 nights) → Homer and Kachemak Bay (3 nights)
For travelers who would rather properly experience one coast than collect distant landmarks. Seward earns its fjords-cruise day; Homer gets enough time for a Kachemak Bay water taxi, harbor food and a weather buffer. Return to Anchorage on departure eve rather than gambling on the long drive.

14 daysAnchorage, Turnagain Arm and Girdwood (2 nights) → Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park (3 nights) → Homer and Kachemak Bay (2 nights) → Talkeetna (1 night) → Denali National Park area (3 nights) → Fairbanks and Chena Hot Springs (2 nights)
This is the full Southcentral-to-Interior trip without the usual mistake of adding Valdez or McCarthy just to make a map look impressive. Extra nights absorb weather, give Seward and Denali more than a single shot, and leave Homer as a genuine coastal stop rather than a punishing detour.
Plan this routeCar-free Southeast / Inside Passage
10 daysJuneau (3 nights) → Sitka (3 nights) → Ketchikan and Misty Fjords (3 nights)
A separate Alaska trip, not an add-on to Anchorage. Juneau is the practical wildlife-and-glacier base, Sitka supplies the strongest cultural and small-town pause, and Ketchikan finishes with totems, rainforest and Misty Fjords. Fly between bases when time matters; take one ferry leg only if its schedule genuinely works.
