Getting around
There is no metro or rail network, and Colorado Springs is not a city to visit car-free unless you deliberately stay downtown and limit yourself to a few zones. Mountain Metro buses are inexpensive and THE ZEB circulates in the city center, but service is too sparse for an efficient Garden of the Gods–Manitou–Pikes Peak itinerary. Rent a car for a first visit, or use rideshare for a downtown-plus-westside stay; expect rideshare availability to thin out at trailheads and late in the evening. Do not assume the attractions are walkable from one another, and do not drive mountain roads in changing weather without checking conditions first.
When to go
September through early October is the best balance: cooler hiking weather, aspen color in the nearby mountains and fewer crowds than summer, though an early snowstorm is entirely possible. June–August has long days and the fullest attraction schedules, but it is the busiest period; book popular timed entries and start outdoor plans early because afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winter is quieter and can be beautiful, but snow, wind and ice can affect mountain roads, trails and summit access; spring is variable rather than reliably warm.
Book before you land
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo — timed e-tickets are required in advance and popular days sell out. · Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway — reserve before arrival for summer weekends, holidays and peak fall-color dates. · Pikes Peak Highway summit drive — book any required timed-entry reservation as soon as its booking window opens for your travel date; summer slots go quickly. · Seven Falls — reserve ahead for weekend or peak-season visits; capacity and parking are the constraint. · Cave of the Winds tours — prebook weekends and school-holiday periods if a specific tour time matters.
- Altitude is real: downtown is already high, and Pikes Peak is far higher. Hydrate, use sunscreen, take the first day gently, and do not turn a headache or nausea into a summit push.
- A car is useful, but drive conservatively. Mountain weather changes fast, roads can ice, and the area is known for active speed enforcement.
- Garden of the Gods is free, not empty. Go at sunrise or late afternoon, and avoid treating its main road loop as a guaranteed parking spot on a summer weekend.
- Do not rely on cash everywhere: the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum is listed as Visa-only, with no cash accepted. Carry a card and check each attraction’s current policy.
- Use normal city caution after dark, especially away from active downtown areas. The southeast side is generally rougher than the west and north; trailheads also invite the usual vehicle break-ins, so leave nothing visible.
- Colorado’s dry sun is harsher than the temperature suggests. Bring layers, water and rain protection even on a warm-looking forecast.
Worth leaving the city for
Great Sand Dunes National Park and PreserveFull day — about 2 hours each way in good conditions, longer with stops or mountain weather.
This is the one truly different landscape within reach: enormous dunes against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, rather than another red-rock park or foothill hike. It earns the long drive if you have already done Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak.

Royal Gorge and Arkansas River corridorFull day for rafting; a long half day at minimum for the gorge alone, with roughly 1–1½ hours each way.
Choose it for whitewater rafting, the dramatic gorge, or a different, drier canyon landscape. It is a better use of a spare day than adding another paid cave or tourist strip in town, particularly in rafting season.

A quiet, scientifically distinctive counterpoint to Pikes Peak tourism: fossil redwoods, high-meadow walks and a much less crowded feel. Best for hikers and families who prefer a calm half-day outdoors.

Cripple CreekFull day — around 1¼–1¾ hours each way depending on route and conditions.
Go for mining history, Victorian-era streets and high-country scenery, not for an elegant mountain town—the casino presence is a real part of the place. Combine it with a scenic drive only if everyone in the group is comfortable with winding roads.
