Denver
Base · 1–2 days
The essential gateway for flights, museums, restaurants, breweries and Red Rocks. Use it for a couple of city nights, not as a pretend mountain base.
Estes Park & Rocky Mountain National Park
Base · 2 days
Colorado’s most accessible high-country national-park stop: alpine lakes, elk, tundra drives and straightforward hiking. Give it two nights; Bear Lake and Trail Ridge Road are too busy and too high for a rushed day trip.
Summit County
Base · 2 days
Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, Keystone and Copper form the easiest substantial ski and high-country cluster from Denver. Frisco is the more practical base; Breckenridge is livelier but more commercial.
Boulder, Golden & the North Front Range
Short stop · 1 day
Choose this strip for Flatirons hikes, foothills access, university-town energy and breweries without committing to the high mountains. It is an excellent first stop, but not a substitute for alpine Colorado.
Aspen, Snowmass & the Roaring Fork Valley
Base · 2 days
Aspen earns its reputation with a walkable center, serious dining, culture and immediate mountain access; Snowmass makes family ski logistics easier. Carbondale or Glenwood Springs can soften the lodging bill without losing the valley.
Salida, Buena Vista & the Arkansas River Valley
Base · 2 days
A notably good-value Rockies base for rafting, hot springs, hiking and big mountain views. Salida has the better town life; Buena Vista is the better choice when outdoor time matters more than restaurants.
Colorado Springs & Manitou Springs
Short stop · 1 day
Come for Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak and an easy southern Front Range break. The scenery is excellent; stay around Manitou or use it as a focused two-night stop rather than trying to explore the sprawling city.
San Luis Valley & Great Sand Dunes
Base · 1–2 days
The state’s strangest landscape: enormous dunes set against high mountains, dark skies and a broad quiet basin. Stay near Great Sand Dunes for sunrise, sunset and stargazing rather than treating it as a long day trip from elsewhere.
Grand Junction, Palisade & the Western Slope
Base · 1–2 days
Colorado’s dry canyon-and-orchard country, built around Colorado National Monument, wine country, peaches and cycling. Palisade is the appealing overnight; Grand Junction is the practical transport and hotel base.
Gunnison, Crested Butte & Black Canyon Country
A more isolated and characterful mountain corner for wildflowers, mountain biking and Black Canyon’s sheer viewpoints. Crested Butte is the destination; Gunnison is the sensible cheaper base.
Durango, Mesa Verde & the Four Corners Southwest
Base · 2–3 days
Durango is the southwest’s best working base, combining a lively historic center, rafting and mountain access. Set aside a full day for Mesa Verde—its cliff dwellings are the point, and they are not a quick roadside detour.
Telluride, Ridgway & the San Juans
Base · 2 days
The most dramatic mountain scenery in the state, centered on Telluride’s box canyon and the surrounding San Juan passes. Telluride is a splurge; Ridgway is the smarter base if you want the landscape without the full price tag.
Classic first Colorado loop
8 daysDenver (2 days) → Estes Park & Rocky Mountain National Park (2 days) → Summit County (2 days) → Denver (2 days)
The sensible first-timer route: city time on arrival, two unrushed days in Rocky Mountain National Park, then a proper high-country base in Frisco or Breckenridge. Finish in Denver rather than risking an I-70 delay before a flight.

10 daysDenver (2 days) → Boulder, Golden & the North Front Range (1 day) → Estes Park & Rocky Mountain National Park (2 days) → Summit County (2 days) → Salida, Buena Vista & the Arkansas River Valley (2 days) → Colorado Springs & Manitou Springs (1 day) → Denver (1 day)
For travelers who want more than ski-country scenery: Boulder foothills, RMNP, Summit County, Arkansas River rafting or hot springs, then Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak. It is busy but geographically coherent.
Plan this routeSouthwest Colorado: dunes, cliff dwellings and San Juans
12 daysDenver (2 days) → Salida, Buena Vista & the Arkansas River Valley (2 days) → San Luis Valley & Great Sand Dunes (2 days) → Durango, Mesa Verde & the Four Corners Southwest (3 days) → Telluride, Ridgway & the San Juans (2 days) → Grand Junction, Palisade & the Western Slope (1 day)
A much stronger choice than trying to bolt the southwest onto a Front Range trip. It gives Great Sand Dunes its necessary overnight, allows a full Mesa Verde day, and uses Durango and Ridgway as workable bases rather than constant hotel changes.
Plan this routeColorado’s serious first circuit
16 daysDenver (2 days) → Estes Park & Rocky Mountain National Park (2 days) → Summit County (2 days) → Aspen, Snowmass & the Roaring Fork Valley (2 days) → Grand Junction, Palisade & the Western Slope (2 days) → Telluride, Ridgway & the San Juans (2 days) → Durango, Mesa Verde & the Four Corners Southwest (2 days) → San Luis Valley & Great Sand Dunes (1 day) → Denver (1 day)
The full-state road trip for travelers with time, a car and tolerance for transfer days. It deliberately gives Aspen, Telluride and Durango two nights each; cutting those stays turns an ambitious circuit into a windshield tour.
