Is this Zion National Park in Utah?
No. This is Zion, Illinois, a small Lake Michigan city in Lake County. Utah park shuttles, Angels Landing permits, Narrows planning and Zion National Park lodging information do not apply here; the ranked-attraction material naming those places is misattributed to Utah.
How long should a first visit to Zion, Illinois be?
One relaxed day is enough for Zion itself: Illinois Beach State Park, a look at the historic planned-city legacy and the marina. Stay two or three days only if you want slow lake time or are using Zion as a base for Chicago, Milwaukee, Kenosha or Gurnee.
Do I need a car?
For most visitors, yes. Metra works well for Chicago, but the station, beach, state park and marina are too spread out for an efficient walking itinerary, and local transit is limited.
Can I swim at Illinois Beach State Park?
Possibly in suitable summer conditions, but never assume it. Check current park access, weather, high-wave warnings and water-quality advisories on the day, and do not enter during storms or hazardous lake conditions.
Where should I stay for a first visit?
Downtown Zion & Zion Station is the least complicated base if Metra access and a little walkability matter. Choose the Illinois Beach side only if shoreline access is the priority and you have a car; Zion has limited conventional visitor lodging and little nightlife either way.
Is Zion a good base for Chicago or Milwaukee?
It can be, but for different reasons. Chicago is feasible by Metra but takes about 1½ hours each way from Zion station; Milwaukee is much easier by car, roughly 50–75 minutes each way in normal conditions.
