Indianapolis and Speedway
Base · 2–3 days
The essential first stop for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Canal Walk, Newfields, the State Museum and the connected Mass Ave, Bottleworks and Fountain Square districts. It makes a strong long weekend, but its spread-out layout rewards rideshares or a car beyond downtown.
Indiana Dunes, Chesterton and Michigan City
Base · 2 days
Indiana’s Lake Michigan strip delivers real beach walks, dune climbs, birding and oak savanna despite the freight lines and industry nearby. Base in Chesterton for the parks and quieter evenings, or Michigan City for more dining and lakefront lodging.
Bloomington, Lake Monroe and Brown County
Base · 0.5–2 days
This is the best southern-weekend base: Bloomington has Indiana’s most interesting restaurant and music scene, while Lake Monroe and Brown County State Park are close enough for proper outdoor days. Nashville is useful for cabins and galleries, though its center gets souvenir-heavy.
French Lick, West Baden and Spring Mill
Base · 2 days
Come for the dramatic West Baden Springs Hotel dome, historic-resort indulgence and easy access to Spring Mill’s caves, trails and pioneer village. This works best as a deliberate two-night splurge rather than a quick roadside stop.
Shipshewana, Middlebury and Elkhart County Amish Country
Base · 1–2 days
A living Amish and Mennonite farming region where bakeries, family-style meals, quilt shops, buggy traffic and the Pumpkinvine Trail give the visit substance. Use Shipshewana as the practical hub, with Middlebury as the less showy food-focused complement.
Parke County, Turkey Run and Shades
Base · 1–2 days
Indiana’s best rugged outdoors pocket combines sandstone ravines, Sugar Creek, canoeing and covered-bridge backroads. Stay near Turkey Run or Rockville; this is entirely car territory, and trails can be genuinely slippery and strenuous.
South Bend and Notre Dame
Short stop · 1 day
Notre Dame is the point: the Golden Dome, Basilica, Grotto, campus walks and stadium tours justify an overnight or focused day. It becomes a much more expensive, traffic-heavy proposition on football weekends.
Columbus
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
A compact, unusually serious architecture stop, with major works by Eero Saarinen, I. M. Pei and Kevin Roche. Take a guided tour or arrive with a self-guided plan; otherwise its importance is easy to overlook.
Fort Wayne
A relaxed northeastern stop with a notably good children’s zoo, riverfront trails, minor-league baseball and a manageable downtown. It is most useful for a two-night family break or to break up an Amish Country drive, not as a headline destination.
Southern Indiana first visit
5 daysIndianapolis and Speedway (3 days) → Columbus (1 day) → Bloomington, Lake Monroe and Brown County (1 day)
The cleanest first-timer route: give Indianapolis enough time to feel like a city, use Columbus as a purposeful architecture stop, then finish in Bloomington for better food and the southern hills. Rent a car for the final two days.

7 daysIndianapolis and Speedway (2 days) → Parke County, Turkey Run and Shades (1 day) → Indiana Dunes, Chesterton and Michigan City (2 days) → South Bend and Notre Dame (1 day) → Shipshewana, Middlebury and Elkhart County Amish Country (1 day)
A properly paced sampler for travelers with a car: city museums and Speedway, real hiking and covered bridges, two unrushed Dunes days, then Notre Dame and Amish Country. Do not cut the Dunes to force in more stops.

The broad first visit for travelers arriving near Chicago or South Bend and leaving from Indianapolis. It moves logically from Lake Michigan through the north-country stops and capital to the wooded south, with French Lick reserved for an actual resort-and-nature finish rather than a rushed photo stop.

For travelers who prefer state parks, independent food stops, college-town evenings and unhurried small-city travel over ticking off attractions. The two-night stays make the rural legs workable; Fort Wayne is optional only for a zoo-focused family detour.
