Portland
Base · 1–3 nights
Maine’s best short-stay base for serious eating, breweries, the Old Port, waterfront walks and easy access to Casco Bay ferries and Cape Elizabeth. Give it two or three nights, not a week, unless dining is the trip.
Southern Beaches
Short stop · 1 night
The Kittery–Ogunquit–Kennebunkport–Old Orchard Beach stretch is Maine’s most straightforward beach-and-inn coast. Choose Ogunquit for the Marginal Way, Kennebunkport for polished harbor scenery, or Old Orchard for family boardwalk energy.
Freeport, Bath and Phippsburg
Use this stretch for maritime Bath and genuinely good beach days at Popham Beach and Reid State Park; Freeport is useful for L.L.Bean, not the main event. It works well as a stop between Portland and the Midcoast rather than a shopping-only detour.
Boothbay Harbor and the Boothbay Peninsula
Base · 2 nights
The easy choice for a boat trip, sailing outing, lighthouse cruise or the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. It is resorty and slow in peak summer, so stay two nights only if you want time on the water.
Rockland, Rockport and Camden
Base · 2 nights
Maine’s most balanced Midcoast base: Rockland supplies ferries, working-harbor texture and the Farnsworth, while Camden has the harbor views and Camden Hills. It is more useful for a multi-night stay than Boothbay and less hectic than Bar Harbor.
Midcoast Islands
Short stop · 1 night
Monhegan, Vinalhaven, North Haven and Islesboro are for cliffs, quiet roads and actual island life rather than a quick sightseeing cruise. Build around ferry schedules and consider going without a car; an overnight is usually more rewarding than a rushed day trip.
Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park
Base · 3 nights
This is the essential Maine landscape: granite ridges, carriage roads, ponds, cliffs and compact villages. Bar Harbor is convenient but crowded; Southwest Harbor is the better base if you want quieter evenings and faster access to Acadia’s west side.
Schoodic Peninsula and DownEast
Base · 2 nights
East of Mount Desert Island, the coast gets quieter and less forgiving: Schoodic Point, Cutler Coast and West Quoddy Head are the payoff. Base around Winter Harbor, Machias or Lubec and arrive with fuel, reservations and a plan.
Bethel, Rangeley and Western Maine Mountains
Pick this band over the coast if lakes, waterfalls, paddling, foliage and skiing matter more than harbors. Bethel is the practical Sunday River and Mahoosucs base; Rangeley feels more remote and lake-focused.
Moosehead Lake, Katahdin and Baxter State Park
Base · 4 nights
Greenville offers accessible lake-and-wildlife country, while Millinocket and Baxter are for travelers prepared for real wilderness logistics. Katahdin is a demanding objective, not an add-on from the coast; give this area its own trip.
Aroostook County
Maine’s far north is potato fields, Acadian culture, long winter routes and a pace entirely unlike the lobster coast. Presque Isle and Fort Kent make sense on a dedicated northern or Atlantic Canada-bound road trip, not as a detour after Acadia.
Maine essentials
8 days / 7 nightsPortland (2 nights) → Rockland, Rockport and Camden (2 nights) → Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park (3 nights)
The right first Maine trip, not a frantic state-wide sweep. Portland covers food and waterfront life; the Midcoast gives you harbors, art and sailing; Mount Desert Island gets two full days for Acadia. Skip extra peninsulas unless you are willing to sacrifice time outdoors.
Plan this routeSouthern coast and food break
5 days / 4 nightsPortland (3 nights) → Southern Beaches (1 night)
Best for a low-driving long weekend, especially in spring or late fall. Portland is the serious base; finish in Ogunquit or Kennebunkport for a coastal walk and seafood rather than pretending you can reach Acadia and enjoy it.

11 days / 10 nightsPortland (2 nights) → Boothbay Harbor and the Boothbay Peninsula (2 nights) → Rockland, Rockport and Camden (2 nights) → Midcoast Islands (1 night) → Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park (3 nights)
For summer travelers who want boats and an actual island stay, not just roadside lighthouse stops. Pre-book the island ferry and keep the island portion flexible around weather; Southwest Harbor is the better Acadia base if quiet matters more than restaurant choice.

15 days / 14 nightsPortland (2 nights) → Rockland, Rockport and Camden (2 nights) → Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park (3 nights) → Schoodic Peninsula and DownEast (2 nights) → Moosehead Lake, Katahdin and Baxter State Park (4 nights) → Portland (1 night)
A deliberate second-trip route for travelers who want the coast to thin out into real backcountry. The DownEast-to-Moosehead transfer is long, and Baxter needs advance planning; this only works if wilderness is the point rather than a Katahdin box-tick.
