Hudson Waterfront: Jersey City, Hoboken and Liberty State Park
Base · 2 days
The best no-car introduction to New Jersey: Manhattan views, walkable waterfront neighborhoods and the New Jersey ferry departure for Liberty and Ellis islands. Base here rather than in Newark if you want urban energy without committing to Manhattan hotel prices.
Princeton
Short stop · 1 day
New Jersey's strongest compact culture stop: the university campus, Nassau Street and Palmer Square are genuinely pleasant on foot, and Grounds For Sculpture makes an easy add-on. It works best as a one- or two-night inland reset, not as a substitute for the coast.
Cape May
Base · 2–3 days
The state's most complete shore stay, with Victorian streets, a usable town center, good restaurants and Cape May Point close enough for cycling and birding. Give it at least two nights; it is too far south to treat as a casual day trip from the Hudson.
Asbury Park and the Northern Shore
Base · 1.5–2 days
Use Asbury Park for live music, beach time and a more adult shore atmosphere; pair it with quieter Victorian Ocean Grove and, if useful, Red Bank. It is the most practical beach break from New York or Newark without a car.
Newark and the Ironbound
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
Come for Portuguese, Brazilian and Spanish cooking rather than a conventional sightseeing day. The Ironbound is ideal for a serious dinner after arriving at EWR or while using Newark Penn as a rail hub.
Lambertville and the Delaware River towns
Short stop · 1 day
A compact river-town stop for antiques, independent shops, canal-side walking and slow meals, with Washington Crossing nearby. It pairs naturally with Princeton and deserves one night if you have a car; do not stretch it into a long standalone vacation.
Long Beach Island and Island Beach State Park
Base · 2 days
This is the classic barrier-island beach choice: Beach Haven and Surf City for activity, Barnegat Light for dunes and lighthouse views, and Island Beach for a wilder shoreline. Bring a car and patience for summer bridges, parking and rental-house logistics.
Atlantic City and Brigantine
Short stop · 1 day
Atlantic City is for casinos, shows, boardwalk spectacle and comparatively easy car-free access, not small-town charm. Sleep on the boardwalk or marina side, then use nearby Brigantine for a quieter beach walk.
The Pinelands: Hammonton, Batsto and Wharton State Forest
Short stop · 1 day
The necessary antidote to the turnpike-and-boardwalk version of New Jersey: sandy pine forest, cedar water, cranberry bogs and farm stops. Batsto is the straightforward entry point; Hammonton is where to eat and stock up in blueberry season.
Ocean City and the Wildwoods
Choose Ocean City for a dry, family-first boardwalk holiday, or Wildwood for giant beaches, amusement piers and unapologetic neon motel culture. Both are built for beach-week energy rather than quiet wandering.
Delaware Water Gap and the Skylands
Base · 2 days
Northwest New Jersey is where to hike, paddle and see why the state is not merely suburbs and highways. Combine it with the Hudson or Princeton side of a trip, never with a rushed Cape May transfer.
Hudson, Ironbound and Asbury Park — no car
4 daysHudson Waterfront: Jersey City, Hoboken and Liberty State Park (2 days) → Newark and the Ironbound (half a day) → Asbury Park and the Northern Shore (1.5 days)
The right short break for first-timers arriving through New York or Newark. Base on the Hudson, take the Liberty/Ellis ferry early, eat one proper Ironbound dinner, then ride the train to Asbury for beach, Ocean Grove and live music. Do not dilute this with Cape May.
Plan this routeClassic first visit: Hudson to Cape May
7 daysHudson Waterfront: Jersey City, Hoboken and Liberty State Park (2 days) → Princeton (1 day) → Asbury Park and the Northern Shore (2 days) → Cape May (2 days)
A sensible first sweep: urban waterfront and Liberty Island access, one polished inland culture stop, a sociable northern-shore base, then Cape May for the finish. Pick up a car after the Hudson portion; the southbound drive is not a quick transfer disguised as an itinerary.

For travelers who want more than boardwalks. Princeton and Lambertville handle the civilized side of central Jersey; the Pinelands breaks up the drive south; Cape May gets enough time to feel like a stay rather than a checklist. Finish in Asbury for music and an easier return north.

The route for repeat visitors or anyone determined to see the state’s real contrasts: Hudson density, Ironbound food, northwest hiking, river towns, barrier-island beach life, Atlantic City excess and a proper Cape May finale. Rent a car after Newark and keep the Skylands-to-south-coast transition deliberately light.
