Salzburg City
Base · 3–5 nights
The essential first stop for the fortress, baroque Old Town, Mozart sites, serious music and the region’s best rail connections. Two concentrated days covers the core; use it as a cultural base, not a substitute for the mountains.
Tennengau: Hallein, Golling and Werfen
Base · 1–2 days
The most rewarding south-of-city corridor for salt-mining history, waterfalls, gorges and Werfen’s castle and giant ice cave. It is practical without a car and works as a full day trip from Salzburg City.
Zell am See–Kaprun
Base · 1–3 nights
The strongest all-round Alpine base: lake time and a rail station in Zell am See, glacier and high-mountain infrastructure in Kaprun. It is busy and resorty, but hard to beat for groups who want hiking, cycling, skiing and scenery from one base.
Gastein Valley
Base · 2 nights
A train-accessible mountain valley with thermal baths, proper skiing and hiking, and more character than a generic resort strip. Base in practical Bad Hofgastein, or choose steep, grand, slightly rough-edged Bad Gastein for atmosphere.
Hohe Tauern and Upper Pinzgau
Base · 3 nights
National-park country around Mittersill, Bramberg, Neukirchen and Krimml, with big valley walks and the Krimml Waterfalls. Stay locally rather than attempting it as a casual day trip from Salzburg City.
Flachgau and Salzburger Seenland
Short stop · 1 day
The quiet lake-and-farmland belt north and east of Salzburg City, best for swimming, cycling and village inns rather than headline sights. Fuschlsee is the easy city escape; Mattsee and Obertrumer See reward slower stays.
Hochkönig, St. Johann and Grossarl Valley
Base · 3 nights
A more lived-in central-Alps choice for hut walks, farm stays and village-based skiing, centred on places such as Maria Alm, Dienten, Mühlbach and Grossarl. Choose a village beside the lift or trail network you actually plan to use; transport hubs are not the scenic bases.
Saalbach Hinterglemm–Leogang
Go here for lift-assisted mountain biking, huge linked ski terrain and frictionless active-holiday logistics. It is polished, pricey and busy, so it suits travelers who value trails and convenience over quiet village life.
Lungau and Obertauern
Base · 3 nights
Salzburg’s high south-eastern plateau combines rural food culture, larch forests, lakes and gentler walking with Obertauern’s snow-reliable skiing. Base around Mauterndorf, Tamsweg or St. Michael in summer; treat Obertauern as the ski-focused option.
Classic first visit: city base with two proper day trips
5 nightsSalzburg City (5 nights (base)) → Tennengau: Hallein, Golling and Werfen (1 full day trip) → Flachgau and Salzburger Seenland (1 full day trip)
For a first visit without a car. Give Salzburg City its due, then use one day for Werfen or Hallein/Golling and one deliberately slow lake day. This is a strong introduction, not an Alps-ticking exercise.
Plan this routeClassic city, lake and thermal Alps circuit
8 nightsSalzburg City (3 nights) → Tennengau: Hallein, Golling and Werfen (1 full day en route) → Zell am See–Kaprun (3 nights) → Gastein Valley (2 nights)
The most balanced first regional trip for summer or early autumn. Salzburg supplies culture, Werfen adds a serious cave or castle stop, Zell am See–Kaprun handles lake-and-mountain variety, and Gastein finishes with hiking and thermal baths. Use trains, but treat the Zell-to-Gastein transfer as a half-day, not a scenic stroll.

10 nightsSalzburg City (3 nights) → Tennengau: Hallein, Golling and Werfen (1 night) → Zell am See–Kaprun (3 nights) → Hohe Tauern and Upper Pinzgau (3 nights)
For hikers, scenic-rail travelers and families who want Krimml and Hohe Tauern to feel like destinations rather than exhausting day trips. The route moves steadily west after Salzburg instead of wasting time returning to the city between mountain bases.
Plan this routeDeep-cut self-drive: villages, spas and Lungau
14 nightsSalzburg City (3 nights) → Tennengau: Hallein, Golling and Werfen (2 nights) → Hochkönig, St. Johann and Grossarl Valley (3 nights) → Gastein Valley (2 nights) → Lungau and Obertauern (3 nights) → Zell am See–Kaprun (1 night)
For repeat visitors, summer walkers and food-minded drivers. This is intentionally multi-base: it trades resort-box ticking for hut walks, village inns, thermal recovery and Lungau’s rural plateau. With public transport, cut either Hochkönig/Grossarl or Lungau rather than forcing every transfer.
