Mitte: Museum Island, Unter den Linden, Nikolaiviertel and Alexanderplatz
Short stop · 0.75–1.5 days
The essential first-visit core for Museum Island, the Cathedral, Unter den Linden, the TV Tower and Berlin’s big symbolic sights. Stay for efficiency and history, not for the city’s best evenings.
Government Quarter and Tiergarten
Short stop · 1 day
Pair the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate and Holocaust Memorial with Tiergarten’s welcome stretch of parkland. It is Berlin’s clearest statement of reunified Germany, but goes quiet after office hours.
Kreuzberg
Short stop · 1–1.5 days
Come for Turkish-German food, canal walks, bars and a lived-in alternative edge that central Berlin lacks. Bergmannkiez is calmer; the Kottbusser Tor end is louder, rougher and more nightlife-driven.
Friedrichshain and the East Side Gallery
Short stop · 1–1.25 days
The East Side Gallery makes this an essential Wall stop, while Boxhagener Platz and former industrial spaces supply bars, markets and club-adjacent Berlin. Expect crowds around the Wall and noise around the party streets.
Prenzlauer Berg and Mauerpark
Short stop · 0.5–0.75 days
A polished former-East district for handsome streets, bakeries, bookshops and easy café life. Go on Sunday for Mauerpark’s flea market and karaoke; skip it if you want Berlin at its rawest.
Neukölln
Short stop · 0.75–1.25 days
Inner Neukölln delivers Berlin’s most international everyday food scene, good bars and easy access to Tempelhofer Feld. It is a better choice for curious repeat visitors than for anyone seeking classic architecture or quiet nights.
Schöneberg and Tempelhof
Short stop · 0.75 days
Schöneberg has mature cafés, queer history and calmer streets; nearby Tempelhofer Feld is the city’s most memorable public space, a vast former runway for cycling, skating and picnics. The field is superb in good weather and bleak when cold or windy.
Charlottenburg, Savignyplatz and City West
Short stop · 1 day
Choose the former West for Charlottenburg Palace, grand boulevards, refined hotels and more traditional restaurant options. It is Berlin at its most polished, though Ku’damm itself can feel chain-heavy and detached from the inner-east energy.
Treptow-Köpenick: Spree, Müggelsee and the old town
Short stop · 1 day
Berlin’s best southeast escape combines Köpenick’s old town and palace with riverbanks, forest and Müggelsee. Treat it as a full excursion from the centre, not something to squeeze after museums.
Wannsee, Grunewald and Spandau
Short stop · 1 day
For lake swimming, woodland and weighty history, pick Wannsee and Grunewald; for fortifications, choose Spandau Citadel and old town. These are separate full-day outings, especially from Friedrichshain or Neukölln.
First Berlin without the pointless sprint
4 daysMitte: Museum Island, Unter den Linden, Nikolaiviertel and Alexanderplatz (1.5 days) → Friedrichshain and the East Side Gallery (1 day) → Kreuzberg (1 day) → Prenzlauer Berg and Mauerpark (0.5 day)
For a first visit with limited time. Put the major museums and symbolic centre first, then give the Wall, Kreuzberg’s food-and-canal life, and one gentler former-East neighbourhood their own space. Do not waste this trip commuting to lakes or City West.

7 daysMitte: Museum Island, Unter den Linden, Nikolaiviertel and Alexanderplatz (1.5 days) → Government Quarter and Tiergarten (1 day) → Prenzlauer Berg and Mauerpark (0.5 day) → Friedrichshain and the East Side Gallery (1 day) → Kreuzberg (1.25 days) → Neukölln (0.75 day) → Wannsee, Grunewald and Spandau (1 day)
The right first-timer week: central history gets proper time, the inner-east and inner-south explain how Berlin actually feels, and the final full day is a deliberate escape from the centre. At Wannsee, prioritise the House of the Wannsee Conference and lakeside/forest time; choose Spandau instead only if the citadel matters more than landscape.

For return visitors who care more about meals, bars, markets, parks and the city after dark than ticking off every monument. Keep one compact central-history day so Berlin’s 20th-century story is not reduced to street art and club queues; use Treptow-Köpenick as the reset day.

This is the version for travelers who want Berlin’s museums and political history without treating the rest of the city as filler. It leaves room for slow meals, gallery detours and a night out, while giving both western lakes/forest and the watery southeast a full day rather than cramming them into museum afternoons.
