Visas & entry
Mexico’s entry rules depend on passport and are enforced by immigration officers, not just airline check-in. Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, EU/Schengen states, Japan and several other countries generally do not need a visa for tourism, but must carry a valid passport and may be asked for onward travel and accommodation details; check Mexico’s current consular rules before departure.
Getting in
- Mexico City International Airport: The main international gateway and the most practical arrival point for Teotihuacán, Tepotzotlán and onward buses or a rental car. It is roughly an hour from Teotihuacán in clear traffic, but metropolitan congestion can wreck that estimate.
- Felipe Ángeles International Airport: A useful alternative for Teotihuacán: it sits north of the capital and can be more convenient than MEX for the pyramids, though onward public transport and car-rental choice are less seamless. It is not a convenient gateway for Toluca, Valle de Bravo or the southern towns.
- Toluca International Airport: The closest airport to Toluca/Metepec and the western side of Edomex, but it has limited international and domestic service. Use it if the flight works; otherwise arrive through Mexico City and transfer by road.
- Mexico City bus terminals: For travelers already in Mexico, the North Terminal is the practical bus gateway for Teotihuacán and Tepotzotlán, while the Observatorio/Poniente side is the useful departure area for Toluca and Valle de Bravo. Confirm the specific terminal with the bus operator; Mexico City traffic makes cross-city transfers a bad gamble.
Getting around
Rent a car if you want to combine bases, reach Nevado de Toluca, butterfly sanctuaries, waterfalls or rural towns such as Aculco and El Oro. Intercity buses are good for direct runs from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, Toluca, Valle de Bravo and Ixtapan de la Sal, but they are poor for multi-stop days and trailheads. Keep one geographic cluster per stay: Teotihuacán is not a sensible day-trip add-on from Valle de Bravo or Malinalco, and weekend road traffic around Valle can be punishing.
Money
The currency is the Mexican peso (MXN). Cards work at hotels, better restaurants and formal attractions in Toluca, Valle de Bravo and Teotihuacán, but carry cash for buses, markets, small towns, parking, guides and rural sanctuaries. Tipping is customary: roughly 10–15% in restaurants when service is not included, plus small cash tips for drivers, guides and hotel staff.
Daily budget · MXN (Mexican pesos); per person per day, excluding international transport.
- Value
- MX$900–1,600
- Mid-range
- MX$1,900–3,400
- High-end
- MX$4,800–8,000+
- MX$900–1,600 works with simple hotels or guesthouses, market meals, buses and one paid sight a day; it is easiest in Toluca, Teotihuacán towns, Malinalco and Ixtapan, less so in Valle de Bravo.
- MX$1,900–3,400 is the realistic comfortable range: a decent private room, restaurant meals, taxis or occasional private transfers, museum/site entry and modest activities. A rental car shared between two or more people can make this range more efficient outside the main bus corridors.
- MX$4,800–8,000+ is where Valle de Bravo/Avándaro boutique hotels, spa resorts, private drivers, paragliding, sailing and polished dining put you. Weekend rates in Valle can jump well beyond this.
- Teotihuacán itself is inexpensive—allow roughly MX$105 for standard archaeological-zone admission, subject to change—but sunrise balloon flights are a major extra, commonly costing several thousand pesos per person.
- Monarch sanctuaries, Nevado de Toluca and rural waterfalls are cheap to enter compared with resort activities, but often require a car, taxi hire or tour; transport, not admission, is the cost trap.
- Avoid Friday–Sunday stays in Valle de Bravo and holiday weekends in Ixtapan, Malinalco and the Pueblos Mágicos if value matters. Midweek hotel rates and road times are markedly better.
Eating well
- Use Toluca's markets for the most purposeful food stop; the city is more rewarding for eating than for romantic wandering.
- Drink pulque in the Teotihuacán valley rather than treating it as an afterthought on a Mexico City day trip.
- In Valle de Bravo, reserve well-regarded hotel and town restaurants on weekends; this is a Mexico City weekend destination and tables, like rooms, tighten up.
- In Malinalco, eat early or book ahead on weekends: the compact boutique-hotel and food scene has limited capacity.
- Buy cheese and dairy sweets in Aculco if driving; it is the sensible place to stock up, not a detour from the southern circuit.
Book before you land
Sunrise hot-air-balloon flight over Teotihuacán, especially for Friday–Sunday, holidays and the dry-season high period; choose an operator with a clear weather-cancellation policy. · Valle de Bravo paragliding on busy weekends or holiday periods, if it is a priority rather than a flexible weather-dependent activity.
- Sleep in San Juan Teotihuacán if the pyramids are central to the trip. You will beat the Mexico City tour-bus wave and avoid turning a major archaeological site into a rushed commute.
- Do not plan around climbing Teotihuacán’s pyramids: climbing is prohibited. At Nevado de Toluca, access rules, vehicle access and closures can change at short notice; check official conditions the evening before and again that morning.
- Altitude is not theoretical around Toluca and Nevado de Toluca. Take the first day gently, carry warm layers and sun protection, and do not attempt the volcano without water, proper footwear and slack in the itinerary.
- For monarch sanctuaries, go in season (roughly late November to February), preferably on a bright, warming day. Expect an uphill walk or horseback option; do not touch butterflies, leave the marked routes or use drones.
- Avoid driving long distances after dark on mountain and rural roads. Use toll roads where practical, keep fuel topped up outside the metropolitan belt, and build in time for traffic rather than trusting map estimates.
- Valle de Bravo is a weekend destination for Mexico City. Arrive midweek when possible, reserve lodging early for long weekends and festivals, and do not expect easy center parking.
Entry rules change — verify visa requirements for your passport before booking this region.
Season by season
January-February
Clear highland days, cold mornings and nights around Toluca, Aculco and Nevado de Toluca, and stable monarch activity from late morning on brighter days.
Monarch butterfly sanctuariesValle de Bravo fireplaces and forest staysTeotihuacán in crisp weatherHighland towns
Holiday weekends fill Valle de Bravo and sanctuary areas; Nevado access can be limited or closed by cold, wind and safety operations.
March-April
Usually dry and the warmest reliable period before the rains, with especially good conditions for Teotihuacán, Malinalco, Ixtapan and Tonatico.
ArchaeologySouthern-town staysRoad tripsOutdoor sightseeing
Semana Santa raises hotel rates and clogs roads; Teotihuacán is exceptionally crowded around the spring equinox.
May-June
The southern valleys become hot, highlands remain pleasant, and rain starts building from June, turning the forests green.

Haze can blunt volcanic views, while June rain makes outdoor plans less dependable.
July-September
This is the wettest stretch, with frequent afternoon downpours, lush forest and misty conditions around Valle de Bravo and the mountains.

Allow slack for wet roads, trail conditions and delayed outdoor activities; this is a poor period for a tightly scheduled Nevado-heavy itinerary.
October
Rain eases while the landscape remains green, with pleasant days across most of the state and major Day of the Dead programming in Toluca and Valle de Bravo.

Festival weekends bring heavier traffic and higher lodging demand, especially in Toluca and Valle de Bravo.
November-December
A strong all-round season: southern towns are comfortably warm, highlands are crisp, rains have largely passed, and monarch colonies begin arriving in November.

December holiday weekends create serious traffic and expensive, limited lodging in Valle de Bravo, Ixtapan and popular Pueblos Mágicos; travel midweek where possible.
Events worth planning around
Spring equinox at Teotihuacán · Usually around March 20-22; exact crowd-control dates vary annually. · Teotihuacán Archaeological Zone
Expect enormous day-trip crowds, controlled entry and a public spectacle rather than a contemplative visit; go on another day if archaeology is the priority.
Semana Santa · March or April, depending on Easter. · Statewide, especially Valle de Bravo, Ixtapan de la Sal, Teotihuacán and main road corridors
Hotels rise in price, resorts fill and roads slow sharply; reserve lodging and transport early or avoid the holiday week.
Feria y Festival Cultural del Alfeñique · Usually mid-October to November 2. · Toluca
Sugar-art displays, altars, food and concerts make Toluca more compelling but fill central lodging on major programme weekends.
Festival de las Almas · Usually late October through the Day of the Dead period. · Valle de Bravo
Concerts, theatre and cultural events increase weekend crowds and lodging prices; book early once the annual programme is confirmed.
Monarch butterfly season · Usually late November through February, with colonies beginning to arrive in early November. · Piedra Herrada, La Mesa and El Capulín-Macheros sanctuaries
This is the key seasonal reason to base near Valle de Bravo or El Oro; visit on a bright, warming day and avoid pairing the sanctuary with a tight transfer or flight.
What to eat
Eat by base rather than chasing a statewide checklist: Teotihuacán is for pulque and valley food, Toluca/Metepec for chorizo verde, market eating and sweets, and Aculco for dairy. In the south, Malinalco is the better choice for a slow meal and Ixtapan de la Sal for resort convenience rather than culinary discovery.
