Teotihuacán Valley
1Teotihuacán Valley
Base · 2 days
Base yourself in San Juan Teotihuacán or San Martín de las Pirámides for the archaeological zone, then stay long enough for the valley’s pulque, obsidian workshops and quieter evenings after the tour buses leave.

Toluca & Metepec
2Toluca & Metepec
Base · 2 days
Toluca is the practical western base for museums, markets and serious regional food; nearby Metepec supplies the pottery workshops and Árbol de la Vida tradition. Come with a plan rather than expecting a romantic colonial stroll.

Nevado de Toluca
3Nevado de Toluca
Short stop · 1 day
Xinantécatl is the state’s big mountain day: volcanic crater scenery, cold wind and real altitude rather than an easy roadside viewpoint. Treat it as a weather-dependent hiking objective from Toluca, not a guaranteed add-on.

Valle de Bravo & Avándaro
4Valle de Bravo & Avándaro
Base · 2 days
The strongest all-round short break in Edomex: lake activities, paragliding, forest walks, waterfalls and good hotels. Stay two nights minimum, ideally midweek, because weekend traffic and prices can spoil the mood.

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries
5Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries
Piedra Herrada, La Mesa and El Capulín–Macheros offer the state’s most memorable wildlife experience when the colonies are present. Use Valle de Bravo or El Oro as a base, and give the sanctuary visit its own unhurried day.

Malinalco
6Malinalco
Base · 2 days
A warm, compact valley town with a steep hilltop archaeological site, an Augustinian convent and a genuinely worthwhile food stop. It has more character than Ixtapan and works best as a slow two-night stay.

Ixtapan de la Sal & Tonatico
7Ixtapan de la Sal & Tonatico
Base · 3 days
Come here for thermal pools, spas and easy family resort time rather than deep colonial atmosphere. Choose Ixtapan for facilities; choose Tonatico for a smaller, less built-up base.

El Oro & Mazahua Country
8El Oro & Mazahua Country
Base · 2 days
El Oro is a cool former mining town with enough architectural interest for an overnight, plus sensible access to Mazahua country and nearby butterfly sanctuaries. It pairs naturally with Aculco, not with the southern towns.

Aculco
9Aculco
Base · 2 days
A highland stone town worth the drive for cheese, dairy sweets, old Camino Real streets and nearby waterfalls. It is at its best with a car and an overnight, not as a rushed detour from the south.

Tepotzotlán
10Tepotzotlán
Base · 2 days
A useful first or final stop near the Mexico City metro area, centered on the former Jesuit college and the richly decorated church of San Francisco Javier. Go for viceregal art and the museum, not for an escape from urban sprawl.

Texcoco & Tetzcotzinco
11Texcoco & Tetzcotzinco
A strong second-visit pairing for Acolhua history, Nezahualcóyotl’s associated gardens and hydraulic works, and a less-touristed counterpoint to Teotihuacán. It is best tackled with a driver or arranged local transport.

Teotihuacán to Valle de Bravo: archaeology, mountain and lake
7 daysTeotihuacán Valley (2 days) → Toluca & Metepec (2 days) → Nevado de Toluca (1 day) → Valle de Bravo & Avándaro (2 days)
The best first serious Edomex trip for travelers with a car. Sleep in Teotihuacán rather than doing the archaeological zone in a rushed Mexico City day trip, then move west through Toluca and Metepec. Treat Nevado as a weather-dependent day, not a promise, and finish with two proper nights in Valle for the lake, forest and better hotels. Do not add Malinalco; it breaks the route.
Plan this routeSouthern Edomex slow circuit: Malinalco and the hot springs
5 daysMalinalco (2 days) → Ixtapan de la Sal & Tonatico (3 days)
A compact warm-weather route for travelers who want archaeology, food and an unhurried spa finish rather than a checklist. Give Malinalco two nights for its hilltop site, convent and long lunches; use Ixtapan or Tonatico for thermal pools and a deliberately low-effort final stretch. A car is strongly recommended, especially if stopping in Tenancingo en route.

6 daysTepotzotlán (2 days) → Aculco (2 days) → El Oro & Mazahua Country (2 days)
Best for a winter self-drive trip and far more coherent than trying to bolt these towns onto Valle de Bravo or Teotihuacán. Start with Tepotzotlán’s Jesuit complex, continue to Aculco for stone streets, cheese and rural scenery, then use El Oro for mining-town architecture and a full-day visit to La Mesa or El Capulín–Macheros butterfly sanctuaries in season.
