Palma’s cathedral is the city’s essential interior-and-exterior sight, dominating the waterfront and Old Town skyline. Go inside rather than settling for the view, then use it as the anchor for a walk through the historic center.
1.3h Timed entryGo at opening on a weekday, before waterfront tour groups arrive.
Buy online for a preferred morning slot in high season; same-day entry can mean a queue.
Pairs with: Royal Palace of La Almudaina · Parc de la Mar · Esglèsia de Sant Francesc
This hilltop castle earns its place for the unusual circular architecture and the broad perspective it gives on Palma, the port, and the bay. Treat it as a distinct excursion from the compact Old Town, ideally when the light is softer.
1.3h Walk upVisit late afternoon for cooler temperatures and better city-and-bay views.
Usually straightforward to buy on arrival, though an online ticket is useful in peak summer.
Pairs with: Fundació Miró Mallorca · Coves de Gènova · Cala Major
The royal palace directly beside the cathedral makes sense as the second half of Palma’s defining historic ensemble. Visit for its layers of island history and elevated views, but keep expectations focused on the setting rather than lavishly furnished rooms.
1h Timed entryChoose an early slot to see it before the cathedral area becomes busiest.
Prebook online for a convenient time in summer; walk-up entry is often possible outside peak periods.
Pairs with: Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca · Parc de la Mar · s'Hort del Rei
Palma’s former merchants’ exchange is one of the Old Town’s most memorable Gothic buildings, best appreciated as part of a harborfront walk. Its value is in the architecture and setting; check whether the interior is open rather than planning a long visit around it.
20m FreeSee it in late afternoon or evening, when the waterfront is at its most atmospheric.
Pairs with: Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma · Passeig des Born · Royal Palace of La Almudaina
The station is primarily worthwhile as the departure point for the historic rail journey toward Sóller, not as a standalone museum stop. If you are taking the train, allow time for the station’s bustle and make it the start of a full outing beyond Palma.
25m Book aheadTake an early departure, especially in summer, for a less crowded ride and more time in Sóller.
Reserve rail tickets ahead for peak-season dates and arrive early for your departure.
Pairs with: Mercado del Olivar · Fundació Joan March Palma · Església de Santa Eulàlia
This is Palma’s best contemporary-art stop, with the added benefit of being embedded in the old defensive walls near the harbor. It is a good counterpoint to the Gothic core, especially for travelers who want one focused museum rather than another church or palace.
1.5h Walk upWeekday mornings are quietest.
Walk-up entry is normally fine; buy online only if you need to lock in a particular exhibition visit.
Pairs with: Sa Llotja · Passeig des Born · Santa Catalina Market
This is Palma’s most useful market visit for seeing local food culture and having an informal lunch amid the Santa Catalina neighborhood. Come hungry and pair it with the nearby waterfront rather than treating it as a formal sightseeing stop.
50m FreeGo in the late morning, before lunch crowds build.
Pairs with: Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma · Sa Llotja · Passeig des Born
The Miró foundation is the best choice for visitors who want a more substantial art experience than a quick city-center gallery, with the artist’s working environment central to the visit. It requires a short trip west of the center, so combine it with Bellver or Cala Major.
1.5h Walk upVisit on a weekday morning for the calmest galleries.
Walk-up tickets are generally practical, but book online for a weekend or a temporary exhibition you particularly want to see.
Pairs with: Castillo de Bellver · Cala Major · Coves de Gènova
This waterfront park provides the classic exterior view of the cathedral and a useful breathing space between Old Town sights. It is best used for a short stroll, photos, or a sunset pause rather than as a destination requiring much time.
30m FreeCome near dusk for the strongest cathedral views and cooler air.
Pairs with: Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca · Royal Palace of La Almudaina · s'Hort del Rei
This church and its cloister reward visitors who want to go beyond the cathedral and find a quieter, more contemplative side of Palma’s Old Town. It is an easy addition to a self-guided historic-center walk, not a replacement for the cathedral.
45m Walk upVisit in the morning outside service times.
Entry is normally handled on arrival; check opening hours, which can be limited around services.
Pairs with: Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca · Església de Santa Eulàlia · Royal Palace of La Almudaina
This elegant central promenade is Palma’s best orientation walk, linking the shopping streets and Old Town with the harbor side. Use it as connective tissue between sights, with a café stop if you need a pause, rather than as a standalone attraction.
30m FreeEarly evening is liveliest, while morning is better for an uncrowded stroll.
Pairs with: Sa Llotja · Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma · Santa Catalina Market
Cala Major is a convenient urban beach rather than Mallorca’s most spectacular stretch of sand, but it is useful if a first Palma visit includes a swim. Use it as a relaxed add-on after the Miró foundation, not as a reason to skip the Old Town.
1.5h FreeMorning is generally more pleasant and less crowded than the hottest part of the afternoon.
Pairs with: Fundació Miró Mallorca · Castillo de Bellver · Coves de Gènova
This central covered market is the more practical, local-feeling food-market stop for snacks, ingredients, and a quick lunch near Plaça d'Espanya. It is less atmospheric than a major monument, but very easy to fold into a central Palma walk.
40m FreeGo before lunchtime, when stalls are fully stocked and aisles are easier to navigate.
Pairs with: Train Sóller Station (Palma de Mallorca) · Fundació Joan March Palma · Església de Santa Eulàlia
This compact foundation is an excellent, low-commitment art stop in the Old Town, particularly if you want to see Spanish modern art without devoting a half-day to a museum. It works best as a purposeful break between the station area and the cathedral quarter.
45m FreeMid-afternoon is often quieter than the morning sightseeing rush.
Pairs with: Mercado del Olivar · Train Sóller Station (Palma de Mallorca) · Església de Santa Eulàlia
These small formal gardens soften the transition between the palace, cathedral, and waterfront. Walk through them as part of the historic core rather than scheduling a separate visit.
20m FreeEarly morning offers the quietest passage through the gardens.
Pairs with: Royal Palace of La Almudaina · Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca · Parc de la Mar
Santa Eulàlia is a worthwhile quick stop for travelers exploring the lanes east of the cathedral, offering a less crowded historic church experience. See it in combination with Sant Francesc and nearby central-market stops rather than making a special journey.
25m FreeGo outside worship times for a more reliable sightseeing visit.
Pairs with: Esglèsia de Sant Francesc · Fundació Joan March Palma · Mercado del Olivar
These compact caves are a convenient geological diversion close to Palma, especially if you are already heading toward Bellver, Miró, or Cala Major. They are not an essential first-timer choice, but make a useful alternative to a beach afternoon or city museum.
45m Walk upVisit early in the day to avoid arriving alongside coach groups.
Walk-up admission is usually workable; check seasonal opening hours before traveling out from the center.
Pairs with: Castillo de Bellver · Fundació Miró Mallorca · Cala Major
The aquarium is a polished family-oriented outing and a sensible rainy or very hot-day fallback, but it does not define Palma in the way the Old Town does. Prioritize it if traveling with children or if marine life is a real interest; otherwise devote the time to the historic center.
2.5h Book aheadChoose the first entry of the day, especially during school holidays.
Book online for peak summer days to avoid ticket lines and protect your preferred entry time.
Pairs with: Cala Major · Fundació Miró Mallorca
