Miami, Miami Beach and Little Havana
Base · 2–3 days
Florida’s strongest urban stop for Art Deco, Cuban and Caribbean food, galleries and nightlife. Base in South Beach for the beach scene or Brickell, Downtown, Coconut Grove or Coral Gables for a less resort-like stay.
The Everglades, Homestead and Biscayne National Park
Short stop · 1 day
This is the necessary wild counterpoint to Miami: sawgrass, mangroves, alligators and water-based access to reefs and Florida Bay. Pick Shark Valley from Miami or Homestead/Flamingo and a Biscayne boat trip; trying to cover every entrance in a day is a mistake.
The Florida Keys: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West
Base · 3–5 days
A slow island-road trip for diving, fishing, mangroves, boat days and the Overseas Highway rather than wide sandy beaches. Break the drive in Islamorada or Marathon, then give Key West at least three nights.
Orlando, Lake Buena Vista and Winter Park
Base · 3–4 days
The state’s essential theme-park base, with Disney, Universal, water parks and the infrastructure to make a family trip run smoothly. Stay near the parks you actually plan to visit; Orlando sprawl makes casual cross-town hopping inefficient.
Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast
Base · 2 days
Pair a working spaceport with an Atlantic surf beach. Kennedy Space Center is a full-day outing, and Cocoa Beach is a worthwhile overnight stop rather than a rushed Orlando day trip.
Tampa, Ybor City, St. Petersburg and the Pinellas beaches
Base · 3 days
Florida’s best city-and-Gulf-beach combination: Ybor’s cigar-and-Latin history, St. Pete’s museums and waterfront, then Clearwater or Pass-a-Grille for sand. Use St. Petersburg as the base if restaurants and culture matter as much as the beach.
Sarasota, Siesta Key and Naples/Marco Island
Base · 2 days
A polished southwest Gulf Coast stretch for soft sand, sunsets, galleries, golf and slower resort days. Choose it for beach leisure and a refined base, not for a packed sightseeing itinerary.
St. Augustine, Jacksonville and Amelia Island
Base · 2 days
The state’s most convincing history-and-beach pairing: colonial St. Augustine, practical Jacksonville access and low-rise Amelia Island. Stay in St. Augustine overnight to enjoy the historic core outside day-trip hours.
Central Florida Springs: Ocala, Gainesville and the Nature Coast
Base · 2 days
Clear springs, paddling rivers, tubing and cooler-season manatees offer an inland Florida that feels far removed from resorts. It rewards two or three slow nights with a car, not a rushed diversion from Miami.
The Emerald Coast and Panhandle: Pensacola, Destin, 30A and Apalachicola
Base · 3 days
For white sand, blue-green Gulf water, seafood and a distinctly Gulf South version of Florida. Treat it as its own trip; it is too far from Miami, Orlando or Tampa for a casual add-on.
South Florida and Keys
9 daysMiami, Miami Beach and Little Havana (3 days) → The Everglades, Homestead and Biscayne National Park (1 day) → The Florida Keys: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West (5 days)
The strongest first Florida trip for adults who want city energy, Cuban and Caribbean food, water time and a real road trip. Give Miami its own days, choose one Everglades approach rather than racing across the park, then split the Keys time between Islamorada or Marathon and Key West.

9 daysOrlando, Lake Buena Vista and Winter Park (4 days) → Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast (2 days) → Tampa, Ybor City, St. Petersburg and the Pinellas beaches (3 days)
The sensible family-and-first-timer circuit: enough Orlando time for three serious park days, a proper overnight stop for Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach, then a St. Petersburg finish for museums, restaurants and Gulf sunsets. Do not reduce Tampa Bay to an Orlando day trip.

A one-way peninsula drive for couples or repeat visitors who prefer old streets, Gulf beaches, museums, wildlife and food to queueing for rides. It is full but workable because each move follows the coast south; add Orlando only by cutting a stop.

For travelers who genuinely want the state’s regional contrasts: Gulf South beaches, colonial northeast Florida, springs, parks, Gulf-city culture, Miami and the Keys. This is a driving trip with long transfer days, not a beach holiday; leave a buffer night if traveling in storm season.
