Visas & entry
Nevada follows United States entry rules. Visa Waiver Program travelers generally need an approved ESTA before flying; other nationalities normally need a U.S. visa unless exempt—verify current rules with U.S. authorities before booking.

Getting around
Rent a car for anything beyond Las Vegas itself: Nevada’s worthwhile landscapes, trailheads and small towns are built around long highway drives, not public transport. Use Las Vegas as a 3–5-day southern base, Reno as a 3–6-day Tahoe/northwest base, and Ely or Elko only for deliberate road-trip itineraries. Las Vegas–Reno is effectively a full driving day; do not treat it as a casual transfer. Winter Tahoe requires snow-driving competence, appropriate tires and willingness to change plans for chain controls or closures; buses in Reno and around Tahoe do not make the region realistically car-free.
Money
The currency is the U.S. dollar. Cards and tap-to-pay work almost everywhere, but carry some cash for tips, small-town businesses and remote-road contingencies; card acceptance does not mean there is reliable cell service. Tip roughly 18–22% at sit-down restaurants and bars, plus customary tips for hotel staff, taxis/rideshares and guides; Las Vegas hotel bills often add resort fees, parking and taxes beyond the headline rate.
Daily budget · USD; per person per day, excluding international transport.

December–February
Southern Nevada has cool-to-mild hiking days and cold nights, while Reno–Tahoe is a proper winter destination with snow, chain controls and occasional road closures.
New Year, CES, holiday weekends and the National Finals Rodeo raise Las Vegas prices; do not attempt Tahoe without winter-driving competence, and Great Basin high roads are generally closed.
March–May
This is prime southern-desert weather, with manageable daytime temperatures and long daylight, while Tahoe remains a variable shoulder season with possible late snow.
Las Vegas is busy and expensive around spring break, March Madness, conventions and EDC; Red Rock Scenic Drive requires timed entry from October 1 to May 31, and high-elevation roads may still be snowbound.
June–August
The Mojave is routinely dangerously hot by midday, but Tahoe, Great Basin, Lamoille Canyon and the Ruby Mountains have their most reliable hiking, lake and alpine-road conditions.
Treat Las Vegas desert sightseeing as a dawn-only activity; many Valley of Fire trails close May 15–September 30, and Tahoe lodging, parking and trailheads need advance planning.
September–November
September and October bring warm but workable southern-desert days, excellent Tahoe hiking weather and cool starry nights; snow and unreliable backroads return at higher elevations later in fall.
Burning Man, the Great Reno Balloon Race and major Las Vegas conventions—especially Formula 1—can distort rates and availability; by late October or November, Great Basin and Ruby Mountain access can deteriorate quickly.
Consumer Electronics Show (CES) · Early January, annually · Las Vegas
One of the city’s biggest convention periods: flights and hotel rates jump, and restaurants, taxis and the Strip are markedly busier.
Wrangler National Finals Rodeo · Usually early to mid-December; December 3–12 in 2026 · Las Vegas
Hotels, flights and restaurants book up well beyond the rodeo venue; reserve a Vegas stay early.
Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) · Usually May · Las Vegas Motor Speedway / Las Vegas
A major citywide demand spike for rooms, rental cars and rideshares; expect late-night traffic and inflated weekend rates.
Reno Rodeo · Usually June · Reno
It materially increases Reno lodging demand and can make a Tahoe-base alternative more expensive than expected.
Hot August Nights · Early August · Reno and Sparks
Classic-car events fill Reno hotels and congest central streets; book early or avoid the area if the festival is not the point.
Burning Man · Late August to early September; August 30–September 7 in 2026 · Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, with effects across northwestern Nevada
It affects rental-car availability, rooms, fuel and roads well beyond Gerlach; do not expect an improvised northwestern Nevada trip during the event.
Great Reno Balloon Race · The weekend after Labor Day, usually September · Reno
Reno rooms sell early and dawn activity changes traffic patterns; reserve if visiting specifically for the launches.
Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix · Usually November; November 19–21 in 2026 · Las Vegas Strip
This is an extreme-rate and access-distortion weekend, with road closures, long transfers and premium hotel pricing; avoid it unless attending.
Eat Nevada by splitting the state in two: Las Vegas for serious dining at every price point, and the rest for Basque-American cooking, ranch-country portions and practical road-trip meals. Do not expect a single statewide cuisine; outside the cities, plan meals around the towns with real services rather than hoping for options on a long highway day.
Las Vegas: Celebrity-chef and chef-driven dining · Steakhouses, tasting menus and international restaurants · Late-night food across the Strip, Downtown and Arts District
Elko: Basque-American restaurants and family-style meals · Lamb, beef and picon punch · Cowboy-country hearty cooking
Carson City, Genoa and Virginia City: Basque food, particularly in the Carson Valley/Comstock orbit · Historic saloon meals and casual old-West dining
Reno: A growing food-and-drink scene · Better range of independent restaurants in Midtown and around Riverwalk than at freeway-edge casino corridors
