Las Vegas
Base · 2 days
Nevada’s essential first stop for shows, restaurants, nightlife and the full-scale absurdity of the Strip. Downtown and the Arts District give it more texture than a resort-only stay.
Red Rock Canyon and the Spring Mountains
Short stop · 1 day
The best easy escape from Las Vegas: serious sandstone scenery, a scenic loop and hikes close enough for a half-day but good enough to merit a full morning.
Boulder City, Lake Mead and Valley of Fire
Base · 1–2 days
This is the southern Nevada desert circuit worth renting a car for: Hoover Dam and Lake Mead for scale, Valley of Fire for the state’s most reliably striking red-rock landscapes.
Reno and Sparks
Base · 1–2 days
Reno is the practical northern Nevada base: better airport access, food and lodging value than Tahoe, with the lake and mountain trails within day-trip range. Stay near Riverwalk or Midtown rather than treating freeway casinos as a destination.
Lake Tahoe, Nevada Side
Base · 1–3 days
Nevada’s Tahoe shore splits neatly between quieter Incline Village and Crystal Bay in the north and casino-backed Stateline in the south. Pick one base and use it well; circling the lake every day is a parking-and-traffic mistake.
Carson City, Genoa and Virginia City
Short stop · 1 day
The Comstock triangle is Nevada’s best history add-on: Carson City museums, Genoa’s old settlement feel and Virginia City’s shamelessly theatrical mining-town fun. It works best as a day or overnight from Reno or Tahoe.
Great Basin National Park and Baker
Base · 2 days
Nevada’s strongest wilderness destination pairs Lehman Caves, bristlecone pines, Wheeler Peak and truly dark skies. Baker is tiny but puts you close; Ely is the smarter service base if you need restaurants and supplies.
Caliente, Pioche and Ely
Base · 2 days
This eastern-Nevada road-trip spine delivers Cathedral Gorge, rough mining history, the Nevada Northern Railway and the empty-road Nevada most visitors never see. Ely is the practical overnight hub, while Caliente and Pioche are character stops rather than polished destinations.
Elko, Lamoille Canyon and the Ruby Mountains
Base · 2 days
Elko supplies the Basque food and cowboy culture; Lamoille Canyon and the Rubies supply the alpine drives, fishing and hikes. It is a deliberate detour, but one of Nevada’s best for travelers who prefer mountains to casino corridors.
Tonopah and the US-95 High Desert
Tonopah is the sensible, characterful break on a Las Vegas-to-Reno drive via US-95, with mining remnants and exceptionally dark skies. Expect a useful overnight with atmosphere, not a resort stop.
Laughlin and the Colorado River
A quieter, cheaper casino-and-river alternative to Las Vegas, built around boating, pools and warm-weather downtime. Go for the Colorado River, not for a diluted version of Vegas entertainment.
Gerlach and the Black Rock Desert
For experienced, self-sufficient desert travelers, this is Nevada at its most uncompromising: playa horizon, hot springs and Burning Man’s strange cultural wake. Services are sparse enough that preparation is part of the trip.
Southern Nevada first trip
5 daysLas Vegas (2 days) → Red Rock Canyon and the Spring Mountains (1 day) → Boulder City, Lake Mead and Valley of Fire (2 days)
The right first Nevada trip if you want Vegas’s food, shows and nightlife without pretending the rest of the state is a day trip. Keep Las Vegas as the hotel base, hike Red Rock early, then give the Valley of Fire–Lake Mead circuit enough time to avoid turning it into a hot, rushed drive.
Plan this routeGreat Basin Highway: Vegas to high desert
7 daysLas Vegas (2 days) → Boulder City, Lake Mead and Valley of Fire (1 day) → Caliente, Pioche and Ely (2 days) → Great Basin National Park and Baker (2 days)
Nevada beyond the casino corridor, with a proper progression from red-rock desert to mining towns, railway history, caves and alpine dark skies. Ely is the practical service stop; Baker is worth an overnight only if you want a dawn start or serious stargazing.
Plan this routeReno, Tahoe and the Comstock
6 daysReno and Sparks (2 days) → Lake Tahoe, Nevada Side (3 days) → Carson City, Genoa and Virginia City (1 day)
A compact northern Nevada trip with a sensible rhythm: use Reno for airport access and city time, commit to one Tahoe shore base rather than constantly moving hotels, then finish with the Comstock’s museums, saloons and old-railroad character.
Plan this routeEastern Nevada to Reno: mountains, mining towns and Tahoe
12 daysLas Vegas (2 days) → Boulder City, Lake Mead and Valley of Fire (1 day) → Caliente, Pioche and Ely (2 days) → Great Basin National Park and Baker (2 days) → Elko, Lamoille Canyon and the Ruby Mountains (2 days) → Reno and Sparks (1 day) → Lake Tahoe, Nevada Side (1 day) → Carson City, Genoa and Virginia City (1 day)
A deliberate one-way traverse for travelers who actually want Nevada’s empty-road interior, not just its two biggest cities. Fly into Las Vegas and out of Reno; the route earns its longer drives with Great Basin wilderness, the Rubies and a Tahoe finish rather than wasting days backtracking.
