Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC deliver the country’s best city-hopping trip without a car. It is the rare US corridor where rail is genuinely more sensible than renting and driving.

The strongest all-round US fly-drive: San Francisco, Yosemite, the Central Coast, Los Angeles and San Diego can make one coherent trip if you resist trying to cover it too fast. It works because cities, coast and big scenery are all within one state, not because the distances are small.

Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Page, the Grand Canyon and Moab form the classic red-rock circuit. This is the best US road trip for enormous landscapes without committing to backcountry logistics.

Seattle, Olympic, Mount Rainier, Portland and the Oregon Coast suit travelers who prefer forests, volcanoes and wild beaches to desert spectacle. The cities are good enough to anchor the trip, but the real payoff is getting out to the coast and mountains.

A Pacific island trip, not a mainland extension: choose one island and do it properly. Oʻahu works for Honolulu and surf; Maui for beaches and Haleakalā; Hawaiʻi Island for volcanoes; Kauaʻi for lush, quieter outdoor travel.

Anchorage, Denali, Seward/Kenai and the Inside Passage offer glaciers, wildlife and distances that make the rest of the country look compact. It is expensive and weather-dependent, but unmatched for travelers who want scale over convenience.

Charleston, Savannah, Asheville and the Smokies combine historic cities, Lowcountry food, Blue Ridge drives and gentler mountain scenery than the Rockies. Choose museums and tours that address slavery and segregation directly rather than accepting polished nostalgia.
